Assistant Attorney General
New Graduate - Class of 2026

The Missouri Attorney General's Office is looking for current third-year law students with excellent credentials who are interested in making a difference in the State to join our Class of 2026. Class members start with other newly-barred attorneys in August following graduation and receive specialized training and individualized mentorship. Openings will be available in a variety of sections within the Civil and Criminal Divisions. A description of these sections may be found at: https://ago.mo.gov/about-us/job-opportunities/#.

Placement of new attorneys is based on both need and preference. New attorney positions may be in any of our five offices (Jefferson City, St. Louis, Kansas City, Springfield, and Cape Girardeau) based on office need with the majority of Class placements located in Jefferson City.

Preferred experience/skills:

  • Strong interest in courtroom and trial litigation;
  • Commitment to public service;
  • Excellent legal writing and oral advocacy

Health, vision, dental, and life insurance plans, state pension, and deferred compensation available. Potential eligibility for federal student loan forgiveness.

All candidates must agree to spend a minimum of two years at the Attorney General's Office and the position is contingent upon candidates obtaining a Missouri law license.

Starting salary is $70,000.

The Attorney General serves as the chief legal officer of the State of Missouri as mandated by our Constitution. The Attorney General is elected by Missouri voters, serves a four-year term, and is not subject to constitutional term limits. The Attorney General’s Office represents and provides legal advice to most state agencies; defends challenges to the validity of state laws; enforces civil law, including consumer protection and environmental laws; defends the State’s interest in civil actions, including bankruptcies, workers’ compensation claims, professional licensing cases, and habeas corpus actions filed by state and federal inmates; and serves as a special prosecutor in criminal cases when appointed. In addition, the Office handles all appeals statewide from felony convictions. The Attorney General’s Office brings and defends lawsuits on behalf of the State and prepares formal legal opinions requested by State officers, legislators, or county attorneys on issues of law. The Office represents the State in litigation at all levels ranging from a variety of administrative tribunals to the U.S. Supreme Court. The Office also includes an Office of Solicitor General, who represents the interests of the state in appellate and national matters.
