Job description

Summary

We are seeking an experienced EMS Senior Technician to support HVAC Direct Digital Controls (DDC) and Energy Management Systems (EMS) operations for projects with the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD).

This role is ideal for a hands-on HVAC controls professional with strong troubleshooting, commissioning, preventive maintenance, and energy management experience. The ideal candidate will have experience working with multiple DDC platforms, a solid understanding of HVAC systems and basic networking principles, and the ability to identify energy-saving opportunities while supporting EMS operations across District facilities.

Duties & Responsibilities

HVAC DDC & EMS Support

  • Assist with maintaining and repairing HVAC Direct Digital Controls (DDC) and Energy Management Systems (EMS)
  • Support EMS operations alongside technical quality support teams
  • Assist with EMS and DDC design reviews and submittal reviews
  • Perform troubleshooting, calibration, and repair of HVAC DDC systems and basic electrical issues

Energy Management & Preventive Maintenance

  • Review utility and energy usage data to identify opportunities for recommissioning and retro-commissioning
  • Analyze EMS alarms and system data to identify:
    • Preventive maintenance opportunities
    • Low-cost/no-cost energy conservation measures
    • Facility improvement opportunities
  • Assist in implementing energy-saving solutions across District facilities

Field Operations & Site Assessments

  • Conduct site visits to inspect and evaluate EMS/DDC conditions
  • Scope and support low-cost repair solutions and system improvements
  • Respond to field trouble calls and resolve operational issues efficiently
  • Support in-house commissioning projects and startup activities

Technical Coordination & Support

  • Assist installation personnel and contractors with system troubleshooting and commissioning support
  • Support project teams during static and dynamic startup phases
  • Maintain organized documentation of field activities and system performance

Qualifications & Requirements

Required Experience

  • Minimum 3+ years of professional experience as an HVAC DDC Technician
  • Strong understanding of:
    • HVAC operations
    • Direct Digital Controls (DDC) systems
    • Energy Management Systems (EMS)
    • Basic electrical troubleshooting
  • Understanding of computer networking principles including:
    • Configuration
    • Maintenance
    • Troubleshooting
  • Ability to:
    • Wire HVAC DDC systems
    • Perform startups
    • Troubleshoot HVAC controls issues

Required Education

  • Associate or Bachelors degree in:
    • Mechanical Engineering
    • Electrical Engineering
    • Computer Science
    • Information Technology
    • Or related field

OR

  • Two-year technical degree in:
    • HVAC
    • Electronics
    • Related technical studies
  • Additional experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis
