How much do laser welding jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 16, 2026, the average hourly pay for laser welding in the United States is $24.40, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $19.47 and $28.37 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How much do laser welders make?

Laser welders typically earn between $40,000 and $70,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Skilled welders with certifications and specialized training can earn higher wages, especially in manufacturing or aerospace sectors.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in laser welding, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Laser Welding professional, you need strong technical knowledge of welding processes, metallurgy, laser equipment operation, and typically a background in industrial manufacturing or welding certifications. Familiarity with computer-aided design (CAD) software, CNC machines, and certifications such as AWS (American Welding Society) Laser Welding credentials are commonly required. Attention to detail, precision, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work well on a team help set successful candidates apart. Mastery of these skills ensures safety, quality, and efficiency in producing high-standard welds in precision manufacturing environments.

What is laser welding?

A Laser Welding job involves operating laser welding machines to join metal or thermoplastic materials with high precision. Workers in this role set up, program, and monitor the laser system to ensure strong, clean welds while following safety procedures. They may also inspect finished products for quality and make adjustments to optimize performance. This job is commonly found in industries like automotive, aerospace, and medical device manufacturing. Skilled laser welders must understand technical drawings, welding principles, and material properties.

What does a typical day look like for someone working in laser welding?

A typical day in laser welding involves setting up and calibrating laser welding equipment, interpreting technical blueprints, and conducting precise welds on metal or composite components. You may work as part of a production or fabrication team, collaborating closely with engineers, quality control inspectors, and machine operators to ensure projects meet stringent specifications. Routine responsibilities also include monitoring equipment performance, troubleshooting minor technical issues, and performing regular maintenance for both tools and workspaces. The role often involves repetitive tasks but also offers opportunities to handle custom or complex welding projects, which can build valuable specialized experience.

Job description

TIG and Laser Welder
Department: Manufacturing / Production
Employment Type: Full-Time
Location: Houston, TX
The Mission
We are looking for a TIG and Laser Welder who understands that the weld is the seal. At Lunar Resources, welding is not a downstream step - it is a critical process in the manufacture of high-reliability electromechanical assemblies that operate in demanding environments. Our welds close hermetic packages, join dissimilar metals, and have to hold under conditions that leave no margin for defects. If you take pride in a clean, repeatable weld and you understand why it matters, we want to hear from you.
About the Role
You will perform precision TIG and laser welding operations on small-scale, tight-tolerance assemblies including Kovar, stainless steel, copper, and dissimilar metal joints. Much of this work supports UHV hermetic sealing - meaning leak integrity and weld quality are primary, and there are no cosmetic excuses for a structurally compromised joint.
This role is open to candidates across experience levels. What matters most is precision, process discipline, and the ability to execute consistently on difficult welds.
What You'll Do
  • Perform precision TIG welding on thin-wall tubing, flanges, and small electromechanical assemblies across a range of alloys including stainless steel, Kovar, and copper
  • Operate laser welding systems for hermetic seam and spot-welding applications, including fixturing and parameter setup
  • Weld dissimilar metal combinations with attention to joint design, heat input, and metallurgical compatibility
  • Set up and qualify weld parameters for new joints and geometries, documenting settings for repeatable production use
  • Inspect welds visually and dimensionally, support leak testing and process verification activities
  • Maintain welding equipment, optics, wire feeds, and shielding gas systems in ready condition
  • Collaborate with engineers to develop and refine welding procedures for new assemblies
  • Maintain traceability documentation and weld logs for all production work
  • Extended hours and weekend work may be required to support critical production milestones
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States

What We're Looking For
  • Demonstrated TIG welding skill on thin-wall, precision, or small-scale assemblies - this is not structural or pipe welding
  • Experience welding stainless steel and at least one other alloy in our stack (Kovar, copper, Inconel, or similar)
  • Ability to weld dissimilar metal joints and understand the challenges involved
  • Laser welding experience is a strong plus; candidates with strong TIG backgrounds and mechanical aptitude will be considered for cross-training
  • Comfort reading engineering drawings, weld symbols, and process travelers
  • Steady hands, patience, and an honest relationship with quality - you know the difference between a weld that looks good and one that is good
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States

Bonus
  • Experience with hermetic sealing processes or vacuum-compatible assemblies
  • Familiarity with AWS D17.1, MIL-W-8604, or similar aerospace/high-reliability welding standards
  • CWI certification or AWS certification in relevant processes
  • Prior work in a cleanroom-adjacent or contamination-controlled environment
