Job description

Location: Rochester, NY

Description of Duties
This skilled position, located within the Department of Transportation Sign Production Shop, is responsible for the layout, design, and production of regulatory and custom signage in accordance with New York State traffic control standards. The role combines digital (Vector-based, Adobe Illustrator and similar software) design and production workflows with hands-on fabrication, utilizing graphic design software, large-format printers, and computer-controlled cutting equipment to produce high-quality signage. Responsibilities include preparing and setting up large-format design files for production and printing, operating and maintaining printing and cutting equipment, and fabricating signs using a variety of materials and tools while ensuring accuracy, quality, and compliance with applicable standards. The position requires strong attention to detail and an understanding of both design principles and production processes. This role blends design work with physical production. This role also occasionally assists with the installation of custom signage. The employee reports directly to and works under the general supervision of the Senior Sign Fabricator or other higher-level staff member. Does related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma plus EITHER:
(A) Graduation with an Associate's degree or sixty (60) college semester credit hours* in an art field, such as graphic design, metal arts, or a closely related field; OR,
(B) One (1) year experience in one or more of the electrical, mechanical, or construction trades, or in sign layout and design, metal fabrication, or as a commercial or professional artist.; OR,
(C) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.
*Candidates qualifying under (A) above must submit a student or unofficial copy of their college transcript along with their application.
