The Landscape Management Internship is primarily a training role for students or recent graduates, focusing on learning management and planning skills. In contrast, a Landscape Technician is a hands-on role involving direct landscape installation and maintenance work. Both roles are essential in the landscaping industry but serve different stages of career development and job functions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Landscape Management Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Landscape Management Intern, you need a basic understanding of horticulture, plant identification, and landscape maintenance, often supported by coursework in environmental science or related fields. Familiarity with landscaping tools, irrigation systems, and safety protocols is important, and some internships may prefer candidates with a pesticide applicator license. Strong teamwork, communication skills, and a willingness to learn help interns collaborate effectively and adapt to outdoor working conditions. These skills and qualities are crucial for supporting successful landscape projects, ensuring safety, and building a foundation for a future career in landscape management.

What is a Landscape Management Internship?

A Landscape Management Internship is a temporary, hands-on training program designed for students or recent graduates interested in the landscape and horticulture industry. Interns typically work with professional landscaping companies or organizations, gaining experience in landscape design, maintenance, plant care, equipment operation, and project management. The internship provides practical skills and exposure to various aspects of landscape management, helping participants prepare for future careers in the field. Interns may also network with industry professionals and potentially secure full-time employment after completing their internship.

What types of projects and tasks can I expect to work on during a Landscape Management Internship?

As a Landscape Management Intern, you can expect to participate in a variety of hands-on projects, such as assisting with the design and maintenance of outdoor spaces, learning about plant selection and care, and supporting irrigation system management. Interns often work closely with experienced supervisors and crew members, contributing to tasks like site assessments, soil analysis, and seasonal planting. This role typically involves both fieldwork and office-based responsibilities, offering exposure to project planning, client communication, and sustainable landscape practices. The diverse nature of the internship provides a well-rounded understanding of the landscape management industry and can help prepare you for advanced positions in the field.

Job description

Yellowstone Landscape is dedicated to excellence in commercial landscaping.  As the largest privately-owned commercial landscaping company in the nation, we offer exciting career opportunities for Landscape Professionals across the United States.  To learn more, please visit our website: www.yellowstonelandscape.com.

Our growing company is seeking college students and recent college grads to join our Internship Program.  The Yellowstone Landscape Internship Program provides students with an array of experiences in the landscape industry including construction, management, tree care, irrigation, fertilization, pest control, plant identification and crew management.  We can accommodate interns at most branch locations.  This is a full-time, paid position.

Responsibilities

We've designed this program with you in mind. You'll be exposed to different aspects of the landscape industry, with a focus on landscape maintenance and installation.  The tree care internship focuses on tree health, pruning practices, removal and business management.

A rotating schedule and learning objectives are clearly defined before you begin, allowing the Branch Manager, Intern Mentor and you to develop a program that best suits your interests and the needs of the branch.

You will be paired with an Account Manager (mentor) who will act as your primary supervisor and be someone you can go to with questions or concerns. Your mentor will share their management philosophy and help you develop your own management style. They'll always be there to provide feedback throughout the program.

Professional development is an important component of the internship program, and we offer outside activities and networking opportunities to enhance a student's exposure to the horticultural environment. We also offer a speaker's forum, covering topics relevant to the company and your professional development.

Requirements

  • Major in Plant Science, Horticultural Sciences, Agriculture, Landscape Management, Urban Forestry, Agricultural Mechanization, Construction, Design or Architecture, or Business.
  • Interest in learning all aspects of the landscape industry.
  • Can-do attitude and strong work ethic.
  • Clean driving record.
  • Strong communication skills.

Compensation
We offer a competitive hourly wage and monthly housing stipend for eligible students because we remember what it's like to be in college and trying to save money!
