What is a landscape business owner?

Landscape business owners are entrepreneurs who operate companies that provide landscaping services, such as lawn care, garden design, installation, and maintenance for residential or commercial clients. They manage both the business and operational aspects, including hiring staff, marketing services, estimating project costs, and maintaining equipment. Successful landscape business owners often have knowledge of horticulture, business management, and customer service. Their role is crucial in creating and maintaining attractive and functional outdoor spaces. They may also offer specialized services like irrigation, hardscaping, or landscape architecture.

What are some common challenges that landscape business owners face in managing both field operations and client relationships?

Landscape Business Owners frequently juggle the demands of overseeing field crews, managing schedules, and ensuring project quality while also maintaining strong client relationships. Balancing these aspects can be challenging, especially during peak seasons when workload increases. Effective communication, delegation, and organizational skills are crucial for addressing unexpected issues, such as weather delays or last-minute client requests. Proactively managing expectations and establishing clear processes can help streamline operations and foster long-term client satisfaction.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a landscape business owner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Landscape Business Owner, you need expertise in landscape design, horticulture, and business management, often supported by relevant experience or a degree in landscaping or business administration. Familiarity with project management software, accounting systems, and landscape design tools like AutoCAD or SketchUp is typically required. Strong leadership, customer service, and negotiation skills help build client relationships and manage teams effectively. These competencies are crucial for delivering high-quality projects, maintaining profitability, and ensuring long-term business growth.

What is the difference between Landscape Business Owner vs Landscape Contractor?

Whether you're already immersed in the world of commercial landscaping or you come from a related field like construction, property services, or B2B sales in the green industry, we want to talk to you.
This is a high-impact, boots-on-the-ground sales role that requires hustle, confidence, and a strong understanding of the commercial property landscape. If you're ready to combine your sales acumen with a team that delivers exceptional service, this could be your next great move.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Proactively identify, qualify, and secure new commercial landscape maintenance and enhancement accounts through networking, prospecting, and cold calling.
  • Develop strategic sales plans to meet and exceed revenue goals.
  • Build long-term partnerships with property managers, developers, general contractors, HOA boards, and commercial property owners.
  • Conduct in-person site visits to assess needs and craft customized proposals.
  • Collaborate closely with operations and production teams to ensure top-notch service delivery.
  • Represent Russell Landscape with professionalism and industry know-how at meetings, trainings, and client-facing events.
  • Maintain pipeline activity and proposal tracking in our CRM system.

What You Bring to the Table:
  • At least 3 years of successful B2B sales experience-preferably in commercial landscaping, construction, building services, or another outdoor services field.
  • A proven track record of hitting or exceeding sales goals in a competitive environment.
  • Familiarity with commercial property market, seasonal service needs, and customer expectations.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with a knack for turning services into clear client value.
  • Tech-savvy with CRM systems, Microsoft Office, and mobile productivity tools.
  • A valid driver's license is a MUST

Bonus Points For:
  • Prior experience in landscaping, horticulture, construction, or property management sales.
  • An existing book of business or a strong local network.
  • Ability to read site plans or construction documents.

Why Russell Landscape?
At Russell Landscape, we believe great work starts with great people. When you join us, you get:
  • A solid base salary plus uncapped commissions.
  • Freedom to own your territory and grow your client base.
  • A full benefits package including medical, dental, vision, and 401(k).
  • A company culture built on trust, teamwork, and shared wins.
