Job description

Overview
Responsible for supervising staff members within laboratory section(s) or area(s) of responsibility and performs technical and administrative duties. Oversees the daily performance of the diagnostic processes of the laboratory, ensuring quality work and adequate staffing within area of responsibility. Performs laboratory testing as needed to maintain and strengthen knowledge base of discipline. Assists in planning and review of technical studies. Acts as a consultant regarding technical questions and problems. Oversees laboratory quality assurance and quality control, procedure updates, proficiency testing, employee training and education, competency, evaluation and implementation of new procedures, equipment, and computer functionality, and ensures compliance with accrediting agencies. Assists Manager with interview and hiring of new staff. Coordinates technical development, review, and training activities with technical and management staff. Assures timely, effective communication with employees. Confers with and counsels staff members regarding problems, errors, and inquiries. Promotes teamwork and maintains focus on customer service. Participates in section administrative activities including but not limited to maintenance of employee records, inventory control/ordering, scheduling, and budgetary planning. Coordinates operational, personnel, and budgetary administrative components with Section Manager/management staff to assure optimal application of resources. Provides after hours assistance as needed. Delegates assignments and tasks as is required to guarantee accuracy and promptness of patient testing and efficient laboratory operation. Collaborates with peers and leadership, ensures standardization of technical procedures, specimen workflows and administrative policies. Prepares and presents data to committees or leadership within and outside of department.
