Position Summary
The Laboratory Manager is an individual contributor position responsible for overseeing and coordinating all laboratory operations within the Cardiovascular Research Institute (CVRI). This role supports research investigating mechanisms of cardiometabolic disease and sex-specific differences in cardiovascular and metabolic health. The Laboratory Manager will manage laboratory operations, ensure compliance with institutional and federal regulations, and maintain the efficient functioning of all in vivo and in vitro research activities.
Minimum Qualifications
โ€ข Education: Bachelor's degree. In lieu of educational requirements, experience may be substituted on a 2:1 ratio (2 years of experience for each year of education).
Experience: Minimum 5+ years of hands-on laboratory research experience in cardiovascular, metabolic, or related biomedical research.
Preferred Qualifications
AALAS certification (Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician or higher). Demonstrate experience with rodent models and animal handling procedures.

Laboratory Operations & Compliance
โ€ข Manage daily laboratory operations, ensuring organization, safety, and efficiency
โ€ข Maintain compliance with IACUC and institutional biosafety regulations
โ€ข Manage laboratory records, budgets, and procurement of equipment, reagents, and supplies
โ€ข Ensure proper documentation of experimental procedures and animal protocols
Technical Training & Protocol Development
โ€ข Train laboratory staff, postdoctoral fellows, and students in experimental design, animal handling, and surgical procedures
โ€ข Develop and maintain standard laboratory operating procedures (SOPs) and safety protocols
โ€ข Provide technical guidance and support to research team members
โ€ข Promote collaborative research practices and knowledge sharing
Animal Model Research
โ€ข Design, conduct, and oversee rodent studies related to cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.
โ€ข Perform and train others in cardiac and vascular and reproductive surgeries, including, Cardiac ischemia-reperfusion injury models. Coronary and vascular ligation or occlusion, atherosclerosis models (e.g., ApoEโป/โป, LDLRโป/โป), syngeneic models of endometriosis and other survival surgeries and post-operative care
Metabolic & Physiological Phenotyping
โ€ข Conduct and coordinate metabolic testing, including glucose and insulin tolerance tests, lipid profiling, and body composition analysis.
โ€ข Perform physiological measurements such as echocardiography, ECG, blood pressure monitoring, and telemetry.
โ€ข Utilize in vivo imaging techniques (ultrasound, optical, or PET imaging) for assessment of cardiac and metabolic function.
Colony Management
โ€ข Manage all aspects of mouse colony operations, including breeding, weaning, recordkeeping, and animal census tracking.
โ€ข Coordinate with veterinary staff to ensure animal health and welfare.
โ€ข Perform genotyping and PCR-based assays, interpret results, and maintain genotype databases.
โ€ข Develop breeding strategies to maintain and expand transgenic and knockout lines critical for research studies.
Data Management & Collaboration
โ€ข Coordinate experimental design, data collection, quality control, and statistical analysis.
โ€ข Support preparation of research reports, grant submissions, and manuscripts.
โ€ข Facilitate collaborations with investigators across cardiometabolic and women's health research programs.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
โ€ข Proficiency in rodent surgery techniques, including cardiac and vascular procedures
โ€ข Experience with metabolic phenotyping methods (glucose/insulin tolerance tests, body composition analysis)
โ€ข Knowledge of physiological measurement techniques (echocardiography, ECG, blood pressure monitoring, telemetry)
