Job description

SUMMARY:

The Laboratory Phlebotomist is a supportive position to the Lab.ย  This position reports to the Lab Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.ย  Other duties may be assigned.ย  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Ensure all lab work has an order in the patientโ€™s chart or a written order that can be scanned into the patientโ€™s chart.
  • Draw bloodwork according to policy.
  • Process and enter requisitions for lab work going to ACL, Quest and LabCorp.ย  Fax all GBBS results to L&D.ย  This is done by a comment on the send out order.
  • Ensure all in-house tests are ordered, drawn or received in the drawing room.ย  Mark tests on the encounter form with the diagnosis code.ย  Enter requisitions for in-house labs if time allows.
  • Check bins in the fishbowls hourly and bring samples/encounter forms to the lab.
  • Forward all in-house tasks to supervisorโ€™s task board after documenting the drawing phlebotomistโ€™s initials.
  • Forward PAP task to appropriate person.
  • Call patients regarding missed appointments for bloodwork and schedule a new appointment in the computer.
  • Clean and stock the drawing room.
  • Monitor drawing supplies and order as necessary.
  • Consistently demonstrates internal and external quality customer service standards to all that request assistance, responding in a professional manner.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to handle difficult situations involving patients, physicians, or others in a professional manner
  • Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Physicians, Supervisors and peers

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

This job operates in a professional office environment.ย  Exposure to blood and body fluids, communicable diseases, chemicals, radiation, and repetitive motions.

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:

This is a full-time position.ย  Days and hours of work are weekdays, either 8 hours per day/5 days per week or 4 10 hour days/ 4 days per week, depending on office location.ย  This position may require travel to satellite facilities within an hour of the main office.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Must have at least a high school education with current certification as a Medical Assistant or Phlebotomy Technician or 1 year phlebotomy experience working in a Hospital or Medical Laboratory.
