Laborer Class C-Public Works

Job Summary:
This position is accountable for performing general unskilled manual work requiring no special training and little or no experience; also, does related work as required. This position is under the direct supervision of the department leader or designee and the general supervision of the Service Director, who may, from time-to-time, review said work, methods of results, and are given general instructions on assignments.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
May be utilized in any department within the City for various General Labor duties.
Mows lawns with manual and zero turn lawn mowers, weed whacks, cuts, and trims trees and bushes throughout the department
Operate and safely utilize equipment such as backhoe, athletic field maintenance equipment, chipper, zero turn lawn mowers, tractor, grounds maintenance equipment, floor scrubber and any and all relevant equipment
Responsible for custodial duties throughout City buildings, including the parks, Wellness Center, Cemetery, Bike Trail, etc.
In season, shovels walkways and applies ice control materials
Lays out all safety equipment for jobs (Cones, barrels, signs, etc.)
Acts as flagger, directing traffic around workers and equipment
Assists Operator and/or Class A Laborers with all manual labor related to job
Cleans up job site
Preps trucks for daily duties
Washes trucks and tools
Cleans shop/shop yard
Performs janitorial duties, cleaning buildings, offices, rest rooms, etc.
Drives truck to and from job and works as a trainee or occasional driver on other types of automotive equipment
Operator smaller equipment
Properly clean, stock and inspect all trucks
Attend safety meeting learning new rules, regulations, and safe work practices
This classification will be cross trained and required to perform all departmental duties
Any other work given within reason from the administration of the department
Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Knowledge of the layout of the City, including Parks, Wellness Center, Cemetery and Bike trail
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety practices of the work
Knowledge of construction and landscaping equipment
Ability to perform heavy manual labor in a variety of climatic conditions
Ability to work in inclement weather
Ability to take/understand work orders
Ability to practice safe working behaviors while on the job
Ability to make decisions in accordance with the laws, ordinances, regulations, and department policies and procedures
Dependable
Maintain confidentiality of all information obtained
Ability to maintain an effective working relationship with other employees and the general public
Upon completion of 6 months of service and an evaluation by the Service Director and appropriate Supervisors, employees MAY be afforded the opportunity to attend training to obtain their CDL Class B license through the City.
Requirements and Qualifications:
High School diploma (GED equivalent) required
Must be at least 18 years of age
Must have a valid driver's license
Must be able to pass a Fit-For-Duty physical, upon request
Requires heavy lifting
Strong attention to detail
Must always wear proper work attire and safety gear
Experience in landscaping, preferred
Essential Functions:
Ability to follow written and oral instructions
Able to communicate via phone, radio and in person and exchange accurate information in such situations
Able to sit, stand, lift, bend, walk, etc.
Able to lift up to 50 pounds
Ability to handle emergencies in all weather conditions and at varying times
