Phlebotomy Supervisor
Keeps current on and complies with phlebotomy practices for all ages and populations. Utilizes the appropriate phlebotomy supplies for population specific blood draws to ensure the safety and well-being of all patients. Adapts language and communication techniques to convey pertinent information to patients of different ages, cultures, and populations.
Essential Job Duties:
  • Performs the scheduling, planning, staffing, and monitoring of workflow to maintain TAT and productivity goals in cooperation with the laboratory director.
  • Coordinates the initial orientation, trains, and evaluates the competency of new employees and takes action to correct deficiencies in cooperation with the laboratory manager or director.
  • Provides staff development through performance development, performance appraisals, and corrective counseling in cooperation with the laboratory manager or director.
  • Provides technical oversight and serves as a resource for problem solving and process improvement to ensure accurate test performance.
  • Identifies and provides educational needs for hospital staff specific to sample collection, specimen requirements, and ordering errors.
  • Participates in education process for New Employee Orientation.
  • Continuously strives to improve department services and organization performance.
  • Assists the laboratory manager/director in effectively managing the department budget for supplies and labor.
  • Supports, implements, and ensures compliance with all department and company policies and procedures.
  • Adheres and enforces the UHS Service Excellence Program standards.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned by the Manager or Director.
  • Assists in th e design, development, and implementation of policies and procedures .
  • Develops and prepares instructional/review materials pertaining to new policies, procedures, or where there are educational needs or deficits.
  • Follows established procedures to perform routine and STAT blood collection and specimen processing for all laboratory testing.
  • Resolves unusual or unclear test orders prior to collection of specimens.
  • Follows up on and addresses all requisition, collection and handling errors for specimens sent out for testing at other laboratories.
  • Maintains an up to date working knowledge of procedures specific to specimen collection, sample identification, specimen processing and transporting biological specimens.
  • Makes decisions consistent with departmental policies and procedures and handles situations not covered by written or verbal instructions appropriately.
  • Ensures that pending reports are reviewed and investigates and manages outstanding specimen/test issues and delays that were not followed up by lab staff.
  • Consults with or apprises CLS, Manager, or Medical Director regarding matters beyond own scope of responsibility or knowledge.
Qualifications
Education/Training/Experience
  • A valid Phlebotomy certification from the State of California required
  • Current BLS from the AHA (American Heart Association) required
  • Previous experience in a clinical laboratory required
  • Experience in a leadership, lead, or supervisor role required
  • Associated Degree preferred; High School Diploma required
