What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Lab School Teacher, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Lab School Teacher, you need a background in education, child development, and curriculum design, typically supported by a teaching credential or degree in education. Familiarity with classroom management software, assessment tools, and innovative instructional technologies is often required. Strong communication, creativity, and adaptability are essential soft skills for engaging students and collaborating with colleagues in an experimental learning environment. These skills ensure effective teaching, foster student growth, and support the unique mission of lab schools to innovate in educational practices.

What are some typical responsibilities of educators working in a Lab School setting?

Educators in a Lab School often balance both teaching and mentoring responsibilities, as these environments are designed to model best educational practices and provide hands-on learning for both students and pre-service teachers. Daily tasks may include developing and testing innovative curricula, collaborating closely with university faculty, and observing or guiding student teachers. The role typically involves frequent reflection and adaptation, as well as active participation in research projects that inform broader educational strategies. As part of a collaborative team, Lab School educators also contribute to professional development discussions and help foster a culture of continuous learning.

ABOUT KHAN LAB SCHOOL:

In 2012, Sal Khan wrote The One World Schoolhouse, in which he outlines how modern education developed and how Khan Academy came to be. But, most importantly, the book outlines a vision for the future of both in-person and online education given the tools we have and the need for many more people to participate in the knowledge economy. In 2014, He founded Khan Lab School to test and refine these ideas in an actual school setting.

Today, Khan Lab School has grown to be a K-12 independent school on three campuses, serving over 260 students in Silicon Valley, CA and Wichita, KS. Our Lower School (grades TK-5) is in Palo Alto, CA, our Middle and Upper Schools (grades 6-12) are in Mountain View, CA, and the newest KLS campus (grades 4-9) in Wichita, KS.

Building on this foundation, Sal Khan's latest book, "Brave New Words," further expands on his educational philosophy and vision for the future. At Khan Lab School, we're committed to implementing these innovative ideas and preparing students for success in the rapidly evolving knowledge economy.

  • Commitment to inquiry-based, project-based learning, and other progressive pedagogies.
  • Prior experience analyzing student data and using a variety of assessment techniques.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills while able to communicate effectively and respectfully.
  • Flexibility to shift and take on a variety of tasks, as the lab school continues to grow and change.
  • Able to reflect on one's own effectiveness, respond well to feedback, and adjust instruction accordingly.

PHYSICAL WORK REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION:

  • Occasionally required to work weekends, nights, or be on-call for special events, which are sometimes held outside and require working in varying weather conditions at all times of the year.
