What is a lab processor?

Lab Processors are professionals who handle, prepare, and process laboratory specimens such as blood, urine, or tissue samples. They ensure that samples are properly labeled, stored, and documented to maintain quality and accuracy for diagnostic testing. Lab Processors may also operate laboratory equipment and assist medical technologists or scientists by preparing materials for analysis. Their role is vital in maintaining the workflow and reliability of laboratory results in healthcare and research settings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a lab processor?

To thrive as a Lab Processor, you need a solid understanding of laboratory procedures, specimen handling, and attention to detail, typically supported by a high school diploma or associate degree in a science-related field. Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS), specimen tracking software, and safety protocols is commonly required. Strong organizational skills, reliability, and effective communication help ensure accuracy and smooth workflow in a busy lab environment. These skills are vital to maintain specimen integrity, prevent errors, and support reliable diagnostic results.

What are some common challenges faced by lab processors, and how can these be managed effectively?

Lab Processors often handle multiple samples and must adhere to strict protocols to ensure accuracy and avoid cross-contamination. Managing a high volume of work, maintaining attention to detail, and meeting tight deadlines can be challenging. Effective time management, strong organizational skills, and clear communication with laboratory team members help mitigate these challenges. Regular training on safety and quality control procedures also supports consistent, high-quality results.

Job description

Job Title:
Lab Automation & AI Engineering Co-Op
Job Description:
Here at Entegris, we use advanced science to enable technologies that transform the world, and we are seeking employees who have the drive to continue the mission.
The Role:
  • Our site in Billerica, MA is seeking a Lab Automation & AI Engineering Co-Op to join our team for the Spring 2027 season. This assignment is intended to be 6 months in duration.
  • This is a hands-on opportunity to apply coding and AI skills to real laboratory challenges - helping automate manual workflows, streamline data handling, and prototype AI-assisted tools that improve lab efficiency and data quality.
  • You will work alongside lab managers, scientists, and analysts to understand real lab processes and build practical, reliable tools that make everyday lab work faster and more consistent. This is a great fit for a student who enjoys working at the intersection of science, data, and automation.

What You'll Do:
  • Support automation of manual lab workflows such as data processing, QC review, and report generation.
  • Develop and test Python scripts or tools for data analysis, cleanup, and automation.
  • Help prototype and evaluate AI-assisted tools (e.g., large language models, AI agents) for practical lab applications.
  • Assist with connecting instrument data to lab systems (e.g., LIMS) and reducing manual Excel/CSV handling.
  • Document workflows, assumptions, and usage instructions for tools you help build.
  • Collaborate with lab staff to gather requirements and improve tools based on feedback.

What We Seek:
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field.
  • Coding ability in Python (or similar) for data analysis or automation.
  • Familiarity with structured data (Excel, CSV, databases).
  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and eagerness to learn lab workflows.
  • Ability to work onsite in Billerica, MA for the full Spring term.
  • Exposure to AI tools, large language models, or AI agent frameworks.
  • Interest in or coursework related to laboratory operations, analytical chemistry, or QA.
  • Experience with APIs, data pipelines, or workflow automation.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work with non-technical users.

Desired Major(s) & Graduation Year:
  • Bachelor's or Master's in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field
  • Graduate in Spring 2027 or Spring 2028

Eligibility:
  • Must be a currently enrolled student
  • Available to work 40 hours a week, M-F (8a-5p) beginning in January through June
  • Must be familiar with the university's requirements to participate in a co-op program
  • Entegris is not currently hiring candidates for co-ops/internships who will need, now or at any time in the future, Entegris sponsorship through the H1-B lottery.
