To thrive as a Lab Planner, you need expertise in laboratory design principles, space planning, and a relevant degree in architecture, engineering, or a related scientific field. Familiarity with CAD software, Revit, and knowledge of industry regulations such as OSHA and biosafety standards are typically required. Strong communication, project management, and problem-solving skills help facilitate collaboration with clients, scientists, and construction teams. These skills are crucial for delivering safe, efficient, and functional laboratory environments that meet both scientific and regulatory requirements.

How does a Lab Planner collaborate with scientific staff and facility management during lab design projects?

A Lab Planner works closely with scientists, researchers, and facility managers to understand specific workflow needs and safety requirements during lab design projects. This collaboration typically involves conducting interviews, organizing design charrettes, and facilitating feedback sessions to ensure that the planned spaces will support current and future research activities. Lab Planners also coordinate with architects, engineers, and construction teams to translate user requirements into efficient layouts and technical specifications. Effective communication and an understanding of both scientific and architectural perspectives are key to successfully bridging the gap between users and the design team.
