What is a Space Telescope?
What are some of the main challenges faced by engineers working on space telescope projects?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Space Telescope Engineer, and why are they important?
What is the difference between Space Telescope vs Satellite Technician?
| Aspect | Space Telescope | Satellite Technician |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Physics, Astronomy, Engineering degrees; specialized training in telescope systems | Electronics, Mechanical, or Aerospace certifications; technical training in satellite systems |
| Work Environment | Research facilities, space agencies, observatories, sometimes in space or remote locations | Field sites, satellite ground stations, repair facilities |
| Employer & Industry | NASA, ESA, research institutions | Satellite service providers, aerospace companies |
| Common Search & Comparison | Yes | Yes |
While both roles involve working with space-related technology, a Space Telescope specialist focuses on designing, maintaining, and operating space-based telescopes used for astronomical research. In contrast, a Satellite Technician repairs and maintains satellites in orbit or ground stations. Both require technical expertise, but their work environments and specific skills differ significantly.

Job description
The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is the operational home of the Hubble Space Telescope, the James Webb Space Telescope, and the upcoming Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, along with ever-growing data archives and public outreach. These missions are guided by a world-class staff of astronomers who support all areas of mission activity and conduct their own self-guided independent research. With continued scientific success of both the Hubble and the James Webb Space Telescopes, STScI begins a new and exciting multi-mission era that will grow again with Roman and future strategic missions (e.g., the Habitable Worlds Observatory). We are now seeking researchers with scientific and technical skills in a broad range of areas in astronomy or planetary science, whether observational, instrumental or theoretical, to fill several open positions in key areas –Ultraviolet Spectroscopy, High contrast imaging, and solar system science  -- with additional positions available for general science support.Â
This position can support hybrid work. Candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to our local market to work onsite as needed. (MD, DE, VA, PA, DC & WV).
Ultraviolet Spectroscopy
Ultraviolet spectroscopy remains a crucial area of expertise for STScI. Ultraviolet capabilities continue to be in high demand on the current Hubble Space Telescope and will be key for the Large Infrared/Optical/Ultraviolet Space Telescope recommended as the first mission in the recent Decadal Survey. We are seeking astronomers with an active research portfolio involving ultraviolet spectroscopy (either rest-frame OR observer frame UV) to help support this strategic scientific area.
High Contrast Imaging/Coronagraphy
We are also seeking applicants with deep and current expertise in high-contrast imaging—particularly coronagraphy. Coronagraphic expertise will support and enhance the scientific return of Hubble and JWST and will guide the operational foundations for HWO.
General Astronomy and Planetary Science
In addition to the areas specifically called out above, we welcome applications from scientists with expertise in any research area in astronomy or planetary science, whether observational, instrumental or theoretical.
The Space Telescope Science Institute aims to expand the frontiers of space astronomy by serving the science community and public in their endeavors to explore and understand the universe, to foster an environment of honesty, respect, inclusiveness, trust, and ethical behavior, to build on our achievements by laying the foundations for the next generation of astronomy space missions, and to enable the extraordinary in our missions by leveraging the skills of our diverse staff. The research staff is an integral component of achieving the success in science operations for the Hubble Space Telescope, the James Webb Space Telescope, the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, and any future STScI’s space mission.
This hiring campaign will specifically seek scientist-track positions at any level of seniority. Scientist-track researchers typically spend 80% of their time supporting science operations (e.g. detector characterization, instrument calibrations, data monitoring and trending, user support) and 20% on independent research. With grant support, scientist-track staff can increase their research fraction up to 50%.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree and research experience in astronomy, planetary science, or a related discipline. The successful applicants will provide operational and developmental support in one or more areas of the Hubble, James Webb, and Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescopes, and the data archive (MAST, including TESS and Kepler data). Successful candidates must be able to cultivate strong working relationships and communicate effectively within cross-disciplinary teams composed of individuals from our many mission partners.Â
Candidates will be assessed on the basis of their research impact, experience and vision, technical skills, and on their potential match against STScI functional requirements.
Applicants should submit the following materials in a single pdf file:
- a cover letter (maximum 2 pages),Â
- a curriculum vitae and bibliography,
- and a summary of current and future research interests, including a description of technical skills (maximum 3 pages). References will not count towards the page limits.
Applicants will be asked to submit the names and email addresses of three individuals who will be able to write letters of reference on their behalf.Â
Candidates should take advantage of the cover letter to describe their particular interest in working at STScI. Candidates will exclusively be considered for scientist-track positions, and they can use the cover letter to indicate how they may be particularly well-suited to such a position.
TO APPLY:Â Share your experience by uploading your application materials. Applications received by June 12, 2026 and reference letters received by June 19, 2026 will receive full consideration.Â

STScI considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers, such as internal pay equity, the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s experience, education, skill, and current market conditions. Salary range of $115-185K. Individuals needing assistance with the employment process can contact us at careers@stsci.edu.
