Job description

The job description reflects the general details considered necessary to fulfill the essential job functions and shall not be construed as a detailed description of all work requirements inherent in this position. Other specific job-related knowledge and skills may be required.

Performs quality laboratory testing by monitoring testing equipment and systems for acceptable analytical performance. Provides direction for non-certified staff performing waived testing. Ensures corrective actions are taken prior to patient test results being reported. Provides orientation of testing personnel responsible for specimen processing, test performance, reporting of test result and for instrument maintenance and calibration of test systems at defined intervals. Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling, processing, and testing. Performs proficiency testing specimens as assigned. Adhere to laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural when test systems are not within the lab's acceptable level of performance. Must identify problems that may adversely affect test results and either must correct the problems immediately or notify lab manager. Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the lab's established performance specifications. Responsible for assuring that services are provided in a manner that is consistent with Ohio County Healthcare policies and procedures and the Purpose, Vision, and Values. May be requested to be member of QI team. Frequently accesses email to stay up to date on information within the organization and provides a way of communication between staff members.

Performs all procedures according to established policies and procedures of OCH and adheres to legal compliance policies as well as other regulatory issues

Communications

  1. Keeps Laboratory Manager or Supervisor informed on matters which are of importance to the well-being of the Laboratory Department (safety, morale, work methods, equipment, procedures, staffing, transfers, etc.).
  2. It is expected staff to attend 75% of the department staff meetings throughout the year as well as initial and date staff meeting minutes. Must attend 100% of mandatory meetings unless approved by Manager/Supervisor in advance.
  3. Attends 100% mandatory hospital and department in-services. If not, in attendance is responsible for obtaining information covered.
  4. Regularly reviews posted memos, notes, and in-services and signs forms promptly.
  5. Maintains confidentiality and complies with HIPAA, always protecting patient privacy.
  6. Establish a good rapport with physicians, physician offices, other hospital departments and has a good working relationship with laboratory co-workers.
  7. Informs director of actual or anticipated problems to include staffing, performance, or patient related concerns.
  8. Listens attentively and request clarification and/or feedback as indicated.
  9. Supervises laboratory students.
  10. If requested, will perform supervising and other reasonable management duties in absence of Manager/supervisor.
  11. Will communicate any competency or proficiency needs to the department manager and take the initiative to obtain additional surgery training, on days off if necessary, as needed per individual technologist, to adequately perform job duties.
  12. Exhibits the positive human relations skills of cooperation, dependability, courtesy, tactfulness, enthusiasm, and overall good attitude. (Follows hospital's attendance/punctuality policy)
  13. Keeps the number of personal calls to a minimum and short.
  14. Frequently accesses email to stay up to date on information within the organization and provides a way of communication between staff members.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • BLS Certification or obtains within six months of hire strongly recommended
  • Associates degree
