Job Summary:

To conduct the actual gas fueled appliance test programs on complex units and prepare the associated documentation. Assumes total responsibility for the completion of assigned projects within negotiated time and cost schedules. May train or supervise others. Generally works without direct supervision.

Responsibilities:

  • Participates on or leads special project teams as identified by management

  • Assumes total responsibility for the completion of assigned projects within negotiated time and cost schedules.

  • Reviews the submittal work order data and identifies further needs to the customer / certifier.

  • Reviews Lab Test reports ensure all tests have been performed according to the work order.

  • Prepares or reviews work orders for the test program.

  • Conducts pre-assessment to ensure the unit is equipped with the proper components and agrees with the construction indicated on the work order and submittal information.

  • May assist certifiers with the construction evaluation, ensuring the unit complies with the construction section of the standard; identifies rationale for compliance or non-compliance.

  • Records test data and prepares charts, tabulates data and calculates results as required. Maintains accurate, orderly and complete test data.

  • May be required to overview Technicians that are conducting tests.

  • May serve as a mentor to more junior technicians.

  • Analyzes test results and determines if results are in compliance with expected trends. May identify reasons for inconsistencies between data and expected results.

  • Writes up non-compliance and provide them to the certifier / customer.

  • Keeps the Lab Manager and / or Manager informed of project status as required, pointing out major problems and non-compliance.

  • Performs within established DQD guidelines.

  • Assists in laboratory audit process.

  • Builds any special fixtures needed to execute testing protocols.

  • Is responsible for managing lab priorities on a regular basis. Manages the information in and out of the lab to and from the Certifiers or Managers.

  • May perform certification work similar to a Certifier II or III.

  • Responsible for maintaining quality and consistency of lab equipment.

  • Responsible for follow-up for any non-conformances as a result of routine calibration.

  • Responsible for the integrity of customer samples while in the lab as per DQDs.

  • Interacts with clients and agencies involved in.

  • Makes field trips and performs test work at manufacturer's facilities as required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Technology or a closely-related field, such as mathematics, physics, chemistry or the equivalent in relevant work experience; OR

  • Associates degree with 6-8 years proven competency in a technical capacity with CSA or equivalent practical experience. OR

  • Non-degree with 11-13 years proven competency in a technical capacity with CSA or equivalent practical experience.

  • Must be able to read, interpret and develop engineering drawings and test data.

  • Must have good knowledge of Laboratory instrumentation, including operating principles and calibration procedures, as well as general Laboratory procedures.

  • Must be team-oriented with good interpersonal skills and abilities to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

  • Must be self-motivated and client-service oriented

  • Demonstrated systematic problem-solving ability

  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, prioritize, follow-through and evaluate assigned functions and duties

  • Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision

  • Good communication skills and ability to supervise other less experienced personnel when needed

  • Thorough knowledge of Standards and testing procedures

  • Thorough knowledge of CSA certification options, programs and services applicable to a variety of equipment

  • Strong organizational, time and project management skills to complete job tasks independently and in a time-efficient manner

  • Technical report writing

  • Computer proficiency (Word processing, Microsoft Word, Excel); keyboarding

  • Use of various lab equipment, instruments and tools

  • Often required to move and lift heavy samples and test equipment.

  • Concentration required to work with electricity and conduct testing.

  • Uses sense of sight, touch, hearing and smell to assess results of testing; shock / energy / heat / mechanical hazards and exposure to toxic materials.
