What is lab maintenance?

Lab maintenance jobs involve ensuring that laboratory equipment, tools, and spaces are clean, functional, and safe. Responsibilities often include routine cleaning and sterilization, performing minor repairs, restocking supplies, and managing waste disposal in compliance with safety regulations. These roles are vital for supporting scientific research and experiments by maintaining a safe and organized environment. What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a lab maintenance technician?

To excel as a Lab Maintenance Technician, you need a solid understanding of laboratory safety protocols, equipment upkeep, and basic mechanical or electrical skills, often supported by a high school diploma or relevant technical certification. Familiarity with lab management software, maintenance logs, and specialized cleaning or calibration tools is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help ensure smooth laboratory operations and rapid response to issues. These skills and qualities are vital for maintaining a safe, efficient, and compliant laboratory environment.

What are some common challenges faced in a lab maintenance role, and how can they be addressed?

Lab Maintenance professionals often encounter challenges such as managing multiple equipment repairs simultaneously, ensuring all safety protocols are strictly followed, and minimizing downtime for essential instruments. Staying organized and maintaining detailed maintenance logs can help prioritize tasks and track recurring issues. Building strong communication with lab staff is also key, as it enables timely reporting and quick resolution of problems, ultimately supporting smooth laboratory operations.

Job description

Ivy Tech Community College seeks a hands-on, industry-experienced Skills Training Instructor to launch and deliver a skills training program in network cabling and fiber optic installation. This is a full-time instructional role responsible for teaching both the fiber optic installer and the network cable installation network cable program within an intensive, cohort-based model. The instructor is the primary campus point of contact for program delivery, leading classroom and laboratory instruction, preparing students for industry certification exams, managing cohort logistics, maintaining the training lab, and coordinating the program's culminating employer fair. This position is available at the Bloomington, Fort Wayne, and Valparaiso campuses, with one instructor per campus.
This position is funded through a Grow with Google Grant, with grant funding scheduled to end in December 2028. Continued employment beyond the grant funding period is not guaranteed and will be contingent upon the availability of alternative funding or renewal of the grant.
Instruction and Curriculum Delivery
  • Deliver all phases of the eight-week curriculum on campus, including boot camp orientation, the two-week fiber optic training, and the four-week network cabling training.
  • Lead hands-on, lab-based instruction and manage day-to-day cohort pacing and student engagement throughout each program cycle.
  • Prepare students for the fiber optic installer certification and the network cable installation written (Pearson VUE) and hands-on examinations.
  • Coordinate certification testing. Support students for on-site or off-site certification testing.
  • Build and maintain course content in the College's learning management system (Canvas).

Student Recruitment, Intake, and Success
  • Partner with campus leadership to recruit and enroll students for each cohort.
  • Manage enrollment, intake documentation, and cohort rosters.
  • Support student persistence and completion through an intensive, workforce-focused program with real attrition risk.
  • Track participant data, including enrollment, completion, certification attainment, and employment outcomes, and report to the Systems Office on a defined cadence.

Employer Engagement and Career Placement
  • Plan and coordinate the culminating employer fair for each cohort in collaboration with Career Link, managing employer invitations, logistics, and student-employer connections.

Laboratory and Equipment Management
  • Maintain the campus training lab, managing equipment inventory, consumable supplies, and readiness for each incoming cohort.
  • Coordinate with campus facilities contacts on lab maintenance needs.
  • Maintain BICSI ATF compliance standards once ATF certification is achieved.
  • Identify equipment replacement needs, submit requests through appropriate campus channels, and communicate supply or readiness gaps to the Systems Office in advance.

Campus and Program Coordination
  • Work effectively with campus stakeholders, including the Dean, Department/Program Chair, Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs, Vice Chancellor of Career Link, and Campus Marketing Director.
  • Provide program content and student success stories to the Campus Marketing Director, who executes local outreach and employer-facing marketing.
  • Attend statewide program meetings with the Systems Office and the cross-campus instructor team.

Reporting and Continuous Improvement
  • Submit cohort reports, certification outcomes, and participant data to the Systems Office on the defined schedule.
  • Participate in program improvement discussions as the program scales toward its statewide goals.
  • Support academic integration efforts, including credit-for-prior-learning pathway discussions led by campus curriculum committees.

General Faculty and Institutional Responsibilities
  • Maintain student records, attendance, grades, and program documentation as required.
  • Manage a learning environment that supports student success and complies with federal, state, and College safety standards.
  • Use Canvas to facilitate teaching, learning, assessment, and communication.
  • Maintain posted office and student engagement hours in accordance with campus expectations.
  • Develop community, industry, and employer contacts to advance College relationships, in coordination with Career Link and campus leadership.
  • Participate in community service, committee work, program accreditation activities, mentoring, commencement, and campus/college-wide meetings as assigned
  • Adhere to all College and campus academic policies.

Required Qualifications
  • A minimum of three years of verifiable field experience in low-voltage cabling, copper and/or fiber optic installation, or related telecommunications/infrastructure work. Experience must be documentable, as verifiable field experience is a prerequisite for BICSI Technician certification.
  • Alternatively, one year of field experience may be sufficient when paired with completion of a formal apprenticeship program.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach technical, hands-on content to adult learners through prior instruction, corporate training, apprenticeship leadership, or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to manage a lab-based learning environment and to pace instruction across a multi-week cohort model.
  • Ability to manage recurring cohort logistics independently, including enrollment, scheduling, materials, lab resources, and student tracking.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple cohorts in parallel while maintaining quality and compliance.
  • Comfort with data entry, tracking, and reporting for program metrics and gift reporting.
  • Clear, professional written and verbal communication, with the ability to represent the program to campus leadership, students, and employer partners.
  • A combination of technical education, industry certification, and verifiable field experience sufficient to demonstrate mastery of the subject matter.

Preferred Qualifications
  • BICSI Train-the-Trainer authorization, enabling on-site delivery of BICSI-branded instruction and exam administration.
  • ETA Fiber Optic Installer certification, or equivalent (for example, FOA or the BICSI fiber track).
  • Prior experience in workforce development, community college instruction, or apprenticeship program delivery.
  • Experience with employer engagement, career fairs, or job placement programming.
  • Experience with learning management systems (Canvas preferred).
  • Knowledge of the data center, telecommunications, or low-voltage contracting industry.
  • Familiarity with BICSI ATF facility requirements.

Working Conditions
  • Work is performed in the classroom, hands-on laboratory, and general campus environments.
  • Frequent standing, walking, and demonstrating during lab instruction.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to demonstrate cable termination, splicing, and the use of hand and power tools.
  • Occasional lifting and carrying of training equipment, tools, and materials (up to approximately 40 pounds).
  • Occasional travel to external ATF testing sites, between campuses, and to BICSI training for required certification.
  • Schedule may include some variable or evening hours depending on the confirmed cohort format.
