Job description

The Lab Manager will work closely with both the research and administration teams, and will
be responsible for managing the daily operations of the lab. The Lab Manager will develop
and implement processes to improve efficiency, reduce waste and increase productivity.
Specific activities will include:
● Optimize and maintain processes to manage common lab supplies, stock inventory,
and order lab consumables and labware
● Prepare and maintain custom reagent stocks (e.g. chemically competent bacterial
cells)
● Ensure appropriate and timely common lab equipment purchasing, integration and
services, including price negotiation, purchasing, installation, calibration, preventative
maintenance, repairs, service contract renewal, and software and hardware upgrades
● Maintain equipment management system, including updating databases when
equipment is installed, modified, replaced or decommissioned
● Work with Accounting to tag all lab assets
● Work with vendors or safety consultants regarding LockOut/TagOut procedures
● Oversee planning and set-up of new lab equipment and lab spaces
● Maintain order and cleanliness of lab spaces and equipment
● Responsible for shipping of biological material both national and international.
● Coordinate fridge and freezer storage organization and maintenance
● Oversee lab safety and regulatory compliance, including tracking of chemicals and
hazardous materials and enforcing PPE policy and lab safety rules
● Oversee the environmental health and safety (EHS) program in the lab, assist safety
professionals and licensing agencies, and interface with building facility
representatives for facilities-related matters
● Develop, implement, and manage record keeping systems for service contracts,
MTAs, and other documentation
● Fulfill other tasks as directed by the manager to assist research teams with relevant
project needs
Requirements:
● Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Biology or a related field, and 5+ years of relevant
experience working in lab management or scientific operations
● Experience with procurement of lab common supplies, lab inventory management
system, and working with external vendors and CROs is required
● Expertise in contract/quotation negotiations, shipping/receiving is required
● Knowledge of lab safety and OSHA regulations and safety training is required;
Experience with permitting, training, and reporting requirements as set forth by local,
state, and federal regulations is preferred
● Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills are required
● Experience of optimizing and centralizing processes across groups is preferred
● Experience with 5”S” or Lean principles is preferred
● Experience with molecular cloning, bacterial and cell culture, protein expression and
purification is a plus
