Job description

Work Schedule:
Monday- Friday, 0800-1630
The Compliance Specialist, Health Information Management (HIM), maintains patient health information and supports record integrity and release of information (ROI) functions. This role helps ensure the appropriate use, disclosure, and disposal of protected health information (PHI) in accordance with HIPAA privacy and retention requirements.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Processes requests, subpoenas and authorizations for medical information according to regulatory requirements. Performs administrative duties related to requests, such as scanning, filing, answering inquiries, invoicing and tracking.
  • Retrieves records from the Lab Information Systems (LIS) and financial systems. Reviews records for accuracy, verifying with Compliance leadership, Risk, and/or legal as necessary.
  • Maintains storage, retrieval, and disposal of records according to retention policies and legal requirements.
  • Assists with internal and external audits by retrieving records from LIS as well as other Electronic Health Records (EHR). Reviews records for accuracy, verifying with Compliance leadership, Risk, and/or legal as necessary.
  • Participates in laboratory site visits to ensure compliance with privacy, confidentiality, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Maintains and updates patient records as needed. Investigates requests to update or merge patient data and makes decisions on action needed.
  • Enters non-conforming event information in Quality system to ensure corrective action.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); Associate's, or Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management, Business, Laboratory Science, or related field. Two years in a clinical environment with data processing, and/ or lab information system experience.
Language Ability:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Convey a skilled phone manner for handling internal and external customers' issues. Working knowledge of clinical laboratory operations and terminology.
Math Ability:
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to work independently; demonstrate initiative and analytical ability; and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills. Possess strong attention to detail, and highly organized. Demonstrate the ability to work with minimal supervision and direction. Ability to work well in a fast-paced professional office and laboratory environment. Strong analytical skills and ability to interpret regulatory guidance.
Computer Skills:
Capacity to cover a broad scope of technologies and functionalities. Proficiency with Excel and data analysis tools.
