JOB SUMMARY

Under the general direction of the Laboratory Manager, the Medical Technologist will perform testing on medical specimens, may collect other bodily fluid specimens, label and transport specimens to the lab, input data into the computer and report results of laboratory tests in accordance with TJC, federal, state, and local guidelines, organizational and departmental policies and procedures. Communicates with medical staff, other departments, and outside agencies while maintaining confidentiality. Position requires self-motivation, creativity, and capabilities to function in a semi-autonomous role within a fast pace and dynamic environment.


STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE

1. Ensures adherence to proper infection control, OSHA and safety standards.

2. Assist with, plan, develop, organize, implement, evaluate and direct the programs and activities of the Laboratory department.

3.  Oversees the work of technicians, phlebotomists or lab assistants as directed by laboratory leadership. 

4. Maintain an excellent working relationship with the medical profession and other related facilities and organizations.

5. Assure that all chemicals and biologicals are labeled in accordance and in compliance with facility policies and procedures, and with regulations issued by governmental agencies, or by TJC.

6. Assist in the proper disposal of chemicals and/or biologicals in accordance with current regulations, as well as our established policies and procedures.

7. Ensure an adequate stock of reagents and other lab supplies is on hand to meet facility needs.

8. Assist in identifying and correcting problem areas, and/or the improvement of services.

9. Participate and assist in departmental studies and projects as assigned or that may become necessary.

10. Participates in continuing education.

11. Make recommendations to the Lab Manager regarding supplies and equipment, makes recommendations and evaluations of new equipment and clinical procedures as requested.

12. Report hazardous conditions/equipment problems immediately to the Lab Manager, and to maintenance, and record in the maintenance log.

13. Maintains appropriate scheduled maintenance and insures complete equipment maintenance records.

14. Responsible for performance and evaluation of quality control and proficiency testing programs.

15. Responsible for accurately completing a myriad of medical/laboratory tests on a variety of specimen types.

16. Maintains work area in an organized and neat manner, maintaining workflow, and proper use of equipment and reagents.

17. Will require direct contact with patients, collection and transport of specimens.

18. Accurately reports test results in a timely manner.

19. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Minimum Level of Education: Completion of an Associate's Degree (Bachelor's Degree preferred) in Medical Technology or closely related sciences with credit hours meeting AMT or ASCP registry and meets the Georgia requirement of a technologist as defined in DCH law Code of Georgia of a technologist Chapter 111-8-10-.06(4)(b)1-8

Licensure, Certification, Registration: Certification as a Medical Technologist (ASCP, AMT, or equivalent), or Recent graduate from an approved accredited program within the last 6 months of hire date and must be certified within 18 months of degree conferred date.\ 

Work Experience: Two years of pertinent laboratory experience required and one year of hospital-based laboratory experience preferred. 

Tools and Equipment Used: Calculator, personal computer, telephone, facsimile machine, paper shredder, copier, printer, standard phlebotomy equipment and collection devices, syringes, needles, measuring devices, a full range of laboratory testing equipment and recalibration equipment.
