Job Summary: Works with histology staff members to coordinate the movement of histology and cytology specimens within the department. Prepares materials for cytology examination. Provides general lab assistance to the Histology/Cytology section and deals with a variety of office duties.
Department: Laboratory - Histology
Location: Englewood Hospital
Status: Per-Diem
Shift: Day
Hours: 9:00am - 5:00pm (Variable Days, Rotating Weekends)
Job Essentials:
1. Receives tissue, organ and other specimens from operating rooms, endoscopy, and other areas of the medical center as well as outside offices.
2. Accessions and efficiently organizes all specimens received. Electronically enters all specimen information into pathology computer system.
3. Places charges in computer for pathology procedures.
4. Prints cassettes and slides using computer system.
5. Follow ups and troubleshoots problem or missing specimen. Gets clarification with outside physicians, nursing units, etc. as needed.
6. Prepares all cytology materials. This incudes logging all sepcimens in the accession log, and generating a computer accession (dirty sheet). Prepares Thin Prep materials according to procedure. Cytocentrifuge body fluids. Prepares and stains smears for cytological examination.
7. Performs and documents all general, cytology instruments, and staining maintenance logs.
8. Prepares cytology specimens on a STAT basis when required.
9. Prepares specimens for send-outs; completes reference lab requisitions, attaches insurance information and diagnoses. Packages specimen properly for transport by courier.
10. Discards leftover, unused material on processed cytology specimens after 2 weeks.
11. Maintains the histology and cytology laboratory in proper order according to all regulatory requirements for quality, cleanliness and safety.
12. Files signed-out slides and blocks.
13. Answers telephone calls for pathology and other department offices using excellent phone etiquette. Transfers calls and/or takes messages for department managers and pathologists.
14. Maintains a high level of quality and safety.
15. Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information.
16. Meets regulatory and annual health assessment requirements.
17. Displays a professional, courteous, and respectful attitude during interactions with all members of the hospital staff and extended community.
18. Maintains high standards of service excellence in all interactions with patients, physicians, other departments and co-workers.
19. Perform other duties as requested
Education Requirements:

  • High School diploma required.

Englewood Health provides a minimum rate to comply with New Jersey Law. The rate of pay for each position will be determined based on a variety of factors including the candidate's relevant experience, qualifications, skills, etc. The minimum rate does not include bonuses/incentives, differential pay or other forms of compensation. In addition to the minimum rate, eligible employees may receive comprehensive benefits, including health insurance, retirement plans, paid time off, and other wellness resources.
