Description/Job Summary
The Science Laboratory Aide oversees the operation of assigned science lab (Biology, A&P, Chemistry, Microbiology, Biotechnology) and related services.
Responsibilities/Duties
  • Read and follow the lab manual instructions (SOPs) for each lab session
  • Follow the directions for each lab, prepare and set up materials and equipment for laboratory experiments on daily basis
  • Prior to each lab session and based on the requirements for each lab, obtain equipment and supplies
  • To ensure adequate supplies and material institute appropriate means of inventory monitoring/ control
  • Maintain labs in a clean, disinfected and orderly manner / Assist with Green house maintenance.
  • Read and follow chemical safety data sheets for implementation of safety procedures
  • Dispose of chemicals and bio-hazardous waste in proper containers, including disposal of dissected specimens
  • Ensure proper storage and retrieval of supplies
  • Consult with Faculty/Course facilitator to purchase perishable lab items as required.
  • Assist and support faculty and students during lab sessions
  • Support Departmental Activities and Associate Dean requests as need arise.
  • Supervise and assist students attending open lab sessions
  • On request of faculty make provide copies of designated lab reports/materials for lab sessions.

Required Qualifications
  1. Science student or AA Science degree
  2. Computer literate
  3. Background in Biological & Physical Science courses preferred.
  4. Open to US citizens, permanent residents and International students with valid documentation.

Administrative requirements:
  • Sign in and out in the daily log for attendance, validation by faculty on site.
  • Give at least 24 hours' notice for pending absence.
  • Call supervisor and/or department administrative assistant regarding unplanned absences.
