Job description

Essential Job Functions:
  • Sets safety performance expectations for the area through example, working with supervisors, safety committee, crews, and home station groups.
  • Sets housekeeping performance expectations for the production area through example, working with supervisors and teams. Participate in regular mill housekeeping tours.
  • Responsible for the Quality Lab:
    • Standardizing testing practices of the Quality Lab
    • Developing, reviewing, and updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) as related to the quality area
    • Ensuring the accuracy and repeatability of quality test equipment and systems
    • Ensuring that operators in the Quality Lab are properly trained on testing equipment and systems
  • Reviews paper machine products against qualification parameters.
  • Reviews paperboard testing results and makes decisions on tests that are marginal relative to the specifications prior to shipment; communicates reject and on-hold information to other mill teams in the absence of the Quality Manager.
  • Ensuring that products produced and shipped to customers are of high quality and meet the customer's requirements.
  • Works closely with the Quality Manager to ensure quality specifications for production, quality lab, winder, and roll line are up to date and correct.
  • Perform statistical analysis on process and product quality parameters to improve quality and machine efficiency.
  • Organizes and leads process improvement teams to address quality and efficiency opportunities and associated cost benefits. Responsible for tracking key process indicators related to team solutions.
  • Responsible for Process Chemical Tracking (cost reporting, consumption, verification) of grade cost models.
  • Works closely with Quality Manager to develop and participate in trial efforts, focus on process quality, product development, etc.
  • Serves as PARCview Process Leader.
  • Leads the 5S initiative.
  • A good working knowledge of environmental requirements, practices, and reporting.
  • A good working knowledge of paper machine and recycle stock prep practices.
  • A good working knowledge of boiler operations and chemistry.
  • A good working knowledge of quality methods.
  • Analytical abilities for troubleshooting and process monitoring.
  • Computer literacy regarding Microsoft Office.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
Ability to apply analytical skills to improve safety and meet production standards.
Strong computer skills are required for this position including reasonable mastery of Microsoft Office Suite and Microsoft Project. Must be proficient in Proficy (Quality Data System) and PARCview (manufacturing analytics software). Knowledge of Minitab statistical software is a plus.
Minimum Qualifications:
Knowledge of paper technology. Extensive knowledge of paper mill safety programs and practices. Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or Pulp and Paper Technology and /or five years of related experience. Must have excellent verbal and written communication abilities. Extensive knowledge of quality and customer service requirements.
Environmental Conditions:
The work environment includes regularly working near moving equipment. The noise level in the work environment is very loud; mill is sometimes very hot or very cold.
Supervisory Responsibility:
Provide work direction to the Quality Manager and the Quality Lab personnel.
Relationships With Others:
Team concept with working relationships between leaders and members.
Authority:
Has commensurate authority to execute duties within the restraints of the Company policies and procedures, and legal regulation.
