Kitchen Volunteer information

What is a kitchen volunteer?

Kitchen Volunteers are individuals who offer their time and skills to assist with food preparation, cooking, and cleaning in kitchens, often for non-profit organizations, community centers, shelters, or events. Their responsibilities may include chopping vegetables, serving meals, washing dishes, and helping to maintain a clean and safe kitchen environment. By volunteering, they help ensure that nutritious meals are provided to those in need and support the smooth operation of community meal programs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a kitchen volunteer?

To thrive as a Kitchen Volunteer, you need basic food preparation skills, knowledge of kitchen safety, and a willingness to follow instructions, with food handling certification often preferred. Familiarity with commercial kitchen equipment and safety protocols, such as proper sanitation procedures, is typically required. Strong teamwork, reliability, and a positive attitude help volunteers work efficiently and harmoniously in a busy kitchen environment. These skills and qualities ensure safe, hygienic food preparation and a supportive atmosphere that benefits both staff and those being served.

What are some common challenges faced by kitchen volunteers and how can they be managed effectively?

Kitchen volunteers often encounter challenges such as working in fast-paced environments, managing multiple tasks simultaneously, and adapting to varying team dynamics. Effective communication and a willingness to learn are essential to overcoming these hurdles. It's helpful to stay organized, follow food safety guidelines, and remain flexible as priorities shift throughout meal preparation and service. Regular feedback from coordinators and fellow volunteers can also support personal growth and improve the overall kitchen workflow.

Job description

Join Us in Making a Difference!

Are you a people-centred professional who enjoys building relationships, creating welcoming experiences, and connecting people to meaningful work?

BB4CK is seeking a Volunteer Engagement Coordinator to join our Programs team. If you enjoy connecting with people, creating positive experiences, and working in a purpose-driven environment where your work helps make volunteering meaningful, this could be the opportunity for you.

At BB4CK, your work helps create a welcoming and inclusive volunteer experience while strengthening the community connections that make a meaningful difference in the lives of children and families.

About Us

Brown Bagging for Calgary's Kids (BB4CK) is a community-funded non-profit organization that has been working for 35 years to make sure kids across Calgary have access to the food they need.

Together with the BB4CK community - donors, volunteers, school staff, and partners - we care for kids and families year-round. We work across the food insecurity spectrum by preparing and delivering lunches to children in schools and summer camps, offering families a dignified choice through grocery cards, and advocating for systemic change in Calgary's emergency food sector.

Our Vision: A future where communities ensure no kids go hungry.

Our Mission: Connect and inspire people to take meaningful action to feed and care for kids.
