The Kenyon College Bookstore seeks an energetic and outgoing part-time Customer Service and Sales Associate. This position alerts the Operational Manager of any customer concerns and presents opportunities for improving sales and services. This position provides assistance to trainees and new hires when the Manager or Supervisor is not available. The hourly rate of pay for this part-time position, without benefits, is $12.42. Reporting to the Operational Manager, hours can be scheduled for days, evenings, late evenings and weekends. Open availability is preferred. Responsibilities include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Offer friendly greetings to customers.
  • Seek a positive outcome for every customer interaction.
  • Assist customers in researching, identifying and locating requested items.
  • Handle customer transactions with cash, credit cards, campus debit cards, gift cards and departmental charges.
  • Responsible for drawer counts at the beginning and end of the shift.
  • Scoop ice cream for customers and restock food service area as well as supplies at service counters.
  • Prepare coffee service area, food prep counters and ice cream cooler.
  • Forward customer requests for new items to the appropriate buyer.
  • Serve as campus information resource, answering questions about the College and the surrounding area. 
  • Offer directions, recommendations and weather updates. 
  • Learn about the new merchandise and annual physical inventory. 
  • Alert the Operational Manager of discrepancies or other mistakes in inventory. 
  • Assist trainees and new hires when the Operational Manager or Supervisor is not available. 
  • Perform duties on daily checklists (opening and closing duties and items needing attention during open hours.) 
  • Review staff journals at the beginning of each shift and review pages upon return to work after time-off.
  • Use good judgement to identify difficult customer situations and contact the Operational Manager or Manager on Duty for support in handling. 
  • Attend and actively participate in staff meetings. 
  • Handle additional tasks as requested by the Operational Manager or General Manager.
    Work hours will vary depending on client requests and the volume of events on campus at any given time.  Flexibility as well as the ability to see projects through to completion are vital assets.
