Construction Estimator
Construction Estimator
Kalamazoo Mechanical, Inc. (KMI) is seeking an experienced Commercial HVAC/R Construction Estimator for an in‑office role supporting commercial projects throughout southwest Michigan. Backed by over 40 years in business, KMI delivers mechanical systems for projects ranging from small commercial upgrades to large‑scale installations exceeding $6 million. This role offers competitive compensation, exposure to complex HVAC and hydronic systems, and the opportunity to play a key estimating role within a high‑performing construction team. You'll join a company that balances close‑knit culture with the scale and reputation to compete at the highest level in the regional market.
Job Duties
  • Create estimates for “plan and spec” and “design build” projects
  • Leverage apps like Sage Construction Management, Procore, and QuickPen to communicate with venders, perform onscreen take-off, obtain pricing for projects, and write purchase orders
  • Assist the sales team in preparing estimates for leads brought in through various departments
  • Professionally organize and present detailed information to team members during the “turnover” process to the construction team
  • Negotiate mechanical construction and installation contracts in the commercial market
Requirements and Qualifications
  • Five years experience with commercial construction estimating
  • General HVAC industry experience (e.g. sales, manufacturing, engineering, or installation)
  • Experience working with engineers and construction managers in the local area
  • Proclivity for accuracy and attention to detail
  • Exemplary organization skills
  • Professional communication skills
Helpful Skills and Experience
  • Experience and proficiency in estimating the following systems and components:
    • Sheetmetal duct systems;
    • Hydronic, refrigerant, gas pipe, and related valves, and fittings;
    • HVAC equipment such as RTUs, AHUs, condensing units, VAV boxes, cabinet heaters, and unit ventilators;
    • Furnaces, air conditioners, mini splits;
    • Boilers, pumps, heat exchangers, water heaters
  • Plumbing estimation
  • Load calculating
  • Duct and pipe sizing
  • Drafting
  • Mechanical contractor's license
  • Experience with related industry software such as Autocad or Revit
  • Knowledge and experience in regional marketplace
