Junior Website Developer information

What is a junior website developer?

A Junior Website Developer is an entry-level professional who assists in creating, maintaining, and updating websites. They typically work under the supervision of more experienced developers and contribute to both front-end and back-end tasks, such as coding user interfaces, fixing bugs, and implementing new features. Junior Website Developers are often expected to have a basic understanding of programming languages like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and may also work with content management systems. Their role is ideal for those starting out in web development and looking to gain practical experience in the field.

What are the typical challenges a junior website developer might face in their first year on the job?

As a Junior Website Developer, you may encounter challenges such as adapting to new frameworks and coding standards, managing multiple projects with tight deadlines, and finding effective ways to debug and troubleshoot code. Collaboration with designers, senior developers, and project managers is common, so strong communication skills are essential. Over time, you'll gain confidence in using version control systems like Git and better understand best practices for responsive and accessible web design.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior website developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior Website Developer, you need foundational skills in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and an understanding of responsive design, usually supported by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, basic usage of content management systems (CMS), and exposure to frameworks such as React or Bootstrap are commonly expected. Problem-solving, attention to detail, eagerness to learn, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure you can contribute to website projects, adapt to evolving technologies, and collaborate efficiently within development teams.

Applied AI Junior Web Developer - Ottawa, ON

Trend Micro

Ottawa, ON

Full-time

Re-posted 5 days ago

Job description

TrendAI, the global AI security leader and enterprise business unit of Trend Micro, empowers organizations with full AI visibility and consolidated security that inspires confidence, drives innovation, and eliminates risk.
At TrendAI, we're always seeking exceptional talent; people who want to collaborate with the best and push boundaries together. Here, your work goes beyond building a career. You will help protect what matters and play a vital role in shaping a safer, more trustworthy AI-powered future.
AI Fearlessly.

Position Summary:

TrendAI is looking for a creative and curious Applied AI Junior Web Developer to join our growing team. This role is all about building the "face" of our digital presence: fast, beautiful, modern websites (not web apps or dashboards) that tell the story of our security innovations to a global audience.

In this role, you'll be at the forefront of how AI is changing the way we build for the web. You'll work with a modern tech stack for content-heavy websites (think Astro, React, Tailwind CSS, and a headless CMS) and learn how to use AI agents to turn big ideas into polished web experiences.

We're looking for someone who's ready to learn, grow, and make a real impact from day one. If you're a recent graduate or someone just starting their web development journey with a passion for the latest web technologies, and a "let's try it" attitude toward AI, we'd love to help you kickstart your career here!

Is this role for you? This position helps build our public-facing corporate websites: globally available, content-authored by marketing in a headless CMS, and optimized for speed and accessibility. You don't need professional experience to apply, personal projects and coursework count, but if building interactive web applications or dashboards excites you more than content-driven websites, this particular posting isn't the right fit for you today. Take a look at Applied AI Sr. Front-End Developer instead. (There's more on how the two tracks connect under "Cross-Role Opportunity" below.)

Responsibilities:

  • Crafting Modern Web Experiences: You'll help build and maintain high-performance public websites using Astro, React, and a headless CMS. You'll focus on creating sites that are not only visually stunning but also lightning-fast, accessible, and easy for our marketing team to update with new content.

  • Styling with Speed: You'll get hands-on with Tailwind CSS and modern component libraries like Preline. You'll learn how to build consistent, beautiful interfaces without reinventing the wheel every time.

  • AI-Powered Development: You'll use AI agents (like Claude Code, Kiro, and GitHub Copilot) to help you design, write code, debug issues, test, document and experiment with new UI patterns. We'll show you how to use these tools ethically to boost your productivity and learn faster.

  • Growing Your Testing Skills: Start building a test-driven mindset using frameworks like Cypress or Playwright. You'll learn how AI can help you write tests and catch edge cases you might not have thought of on your own.

  • End-to-End Ownership: Develop ownership of tasks from start to finish. We believe in giving you real responsibility while ensuring you have the guidance you need to succeed.

  • Continuous Learning: You'll have opportunities for learning and improvement, to explore new AI tools, frontend technologies, and best practices. We encourage curiosity and experimentation!

  • Contributing to Team Knowledge: As you learn, you'll help document processes and share insights with the R&D team. Your fresh perspective as someone new to the field is valuable to us!

Qualifications:

  • What to show us: We'd love to see a link to a real, live website you've built (even a simple one). Bonus points if it pulls content from a CMS or you can walk us through how someone non-technical could update it.

  • The Fundamentals: You have a solid grasp of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. You understand how the web works and how to make things look good on different screen and device sizes.

  • Modern Tools: You're experienced with TypeScript, React, and ideally Astro. If you've built a real website (for yourself, a class, or a business) using these, we want to see it!

  • Styling Enthusiast: You enjoy making beautiful web experiences and are interested in exploring component libraries like Preline, Flowbite, or DaisyUI to build interfaces quickly.

  • AI Tooling Proficiency: While you don't need to be an AI expert, it would be a great advantage if you had experience using AI tools to increase productivity and were willing to experiment with modern AI web technologies.

  • Cloud Awareness: You're interested in learning how the "backend" of a website works, specifically within the AWS ecosystem.

  • Problem-Solving Mindset: A proactive approach to tackling challenges and the resilience to work through problems when they arise.

  • Team Player Attitude: Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with others. We value respect, openness, and the willingness to both teach and learn.

  • Growth Mindset: Eagerness to learn new tools and technologies, participate in hackathon events, and the ability to adapt quickly in our fast-paced environment.

  • Testing Curiosity: Some exposure to or interest in testing practices (TDD, Cypress, Playwright) is a plus.

  • Soft Skills: Exceptional attention to detail, a proactive approach to problem-solving, and a growth mindset.

  • Bonus:

    • Basic knowledge of cloud services (AWS), experience with Infrastructure as Code (AWS CDK) or containerization (Docker)

    • Experience with any AI development tools or productivity enhancer

    • Contributions to open-source projects or a strong portfolio of personal projects

Cross-Role Opportunity:

This posting is scoped to public website and CMS work, and that's what we're hiring for. Our web development team (public websites) and front-end development team (interactive web applications) share the same leadership, mentorship, AI tooling, and technical support, so depending on project needs and your interests, there may be an opportunity to move into front-end development work on our Cybersecurity Platform. For this role, please apply based on the website experience you have today.

At Trend Micro, we embrace change, empower people, and encourage innovation in a connected world. Our diversity and multicultural workforce are key contributing factors to our success across the globe.Trend Micro welcomes and encourages applications from people with disabilities. Accommodations are available on request for candidates taking part in all aspects of the selection process.
