Job description

Edgewater Technical Associates is seeking qualified candidates for a Chemical Engineer (Junior to Mid Level) opportunity in Johnson City, TN.
Position Overview:
We are seeking a motivated entry- to junior-level Chemical Engineer to support the startup, commissioning, and operation of complex chemical process systems within a highly regulated industrial manufacturing environment. This position offers an excellent opportunity to work alongside experienced engineers and technical specialists while developing hands-on knowledge of integrated process equipment, chemical systems, and operational excellence.
The successful candidate will assist with process troubleshooting, system documentation, procedure development, and commissioning activities while gaining exposure to large-scale industrial operations.
Responsibilities:
  • Support startup, commissioning, and operational readiness activities for chemical process systems.
  • Assist in developing, reviewing, and updating operating, startup, and commissioning procedures.
  • Learn and develop an understanding of integrated process systems and how equipment and subsystems interact.
  • Support troubleshooting efforts by collecting process data, identifying issues, and working with senior engineers to implement solutions.
  • Participate in system walkdowns to verify equipment installation, configuration, and readiness for operation.
  • Monitor process performance and assist with identifying opportunities for process improvements.
  • Collaborate with engineering, operations, maintenance, and technical teams to support safe and reliable plant operations.
  • Maintain engineering documentation, process records, and technical reports.
  • Adhere to all safety, quality, and regulatory requirements.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • 0-8 years of engineering experience (internships, co-ops, or relevant industrial experience are encouraged).
  • Fundamental understanding of chemical engineering principles, including mass and energy balances, process equipment, and chemical operations.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Internship, co-op, or academic project experience in chemical manufacturing, industrial processing, specialty chemicals, pharmaceuticals, materials processing, or other process industries.
  • Exposure to process flow diagrams (PFDs), P&IDs, or engineering drawings.
  • Familiarity with process safety concepts and industrial operating practices.
  • Experience with data analysis or process improvement projects.
  • Experience working in a regulated manufacturing or industrial environment.
