What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Junior Structural Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior Structural Engineer, you need a solid background in civil or structural engineering principles, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with structural analysis software such as AutoCAD, SAP2000, or ETABS, and progress toward EIT or FE certification, is often required. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and effective teamwork and communication abilities help you excel in this collaborative field. These competencies ensure safe, efficient, and compliant structural designs and contribute to successful project delivery.

What are some common challenges faced by Junior Structural Engineers when starting their careers?

Junior Structural Engineers often encounter challenges such as interpreting complex design codes, managing time across multiple projects, and effectively communicating technical details to senior engineers and other stakeholders. Adjusting to the fast-paced nature of the construction industry and learning to balance fieldwork with office-based design tasks can also be demanding. However, many organizations support new engineers with mentorship, training sessions, and collaborative team environments to help them overcome these challenges and grow professionally.

What does a Junior Structural Engineer do?

A Junior Structural Engineer assists in designing, analyzing, and evaluating structures such as buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure. They work under the supervision of more experienced engineers, preparing drawings, calculations, and reports. Their responsibilities often include site visits, reviewing construction materials, and ensuring compliance with safety and building codes. This role is ideal for recent engineering graduates who are looking to gain practical experience and work towards professional licensure.

What is the difference between Junior Structural Engineer vs Structural Designer?

Job description

Senior Structural Engineer - Facilities Design | Ogden, UT

Nexeo Staffing is hiring Senior Structural Engineers for a direct-hire role supporting a long-term infrastructure modernization program in Ogden, Utah. This role supports the Engineering & Manufacturing Development (EMD) phase of a federally funded initiative focused on the design of secure, mission-critical underground facilities.

This is a facility-focused structural engineering role—not manufacturing, production-line, or residential work. Engineers in this position will lead the design of reinforced concrete and structural steel systems, including foundations, seismic systems, and underground structures for large, complex facilities.

This opportunity is ideal for structural engineers with experience in nuclear, industrial, government, military, data centers, hospitals, or large commercial facilities who are seeking a stable, high-visibility role on a nationally significant program.

Responsibilities

• Lead structural engineering design efforts for concrete and steel structures, including seismic design

• Prepare and review formal calculations, evaluations, studies, and technical specifications

• Develop and review structural drawings including foundations, framing plans, and detailed layouts

• Review existing conditions, as-builts, and field data to support design development

• Support field-based activities such as boring oversight and facility walkdowns

• Incorporate client, contractor, and subcontractor input into design solutions

• Create configuration packages supporting change management, procurement, and construction

• Ensure engineering deliverables meet quality, schedule, and contract requirements

• Coordinate closely with civil, mechanical, electrical, architectural, and systems engineering teams

• Mentor junior structural engineers and provide strong technical guidance

Required Qualifications

• U.S. Citizenship

• Ability to obtain and maintain a Security Clearance

• Ability to pass a background check and drug screening (including marijuana)

• Real ID-compliant driver’s license or state ID

• Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the United States

• Strong working knowledge of structural engineering principles and design practices

• Experience producing and reviewing structural deliverables (drawings, specs, calculations)

• Proficiency with standard office tools (Microsoft Office, Visio, etc.)

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

One of the following experience combinations:

• High School diploma or GED + 12+ years of structural engineering experience

• Bachelor’s degree + 6+ years of structural engineering experience

Preferred / Desired Qualifications

• Active or previously held security clearance

• Master’s degree in Structural Engineering or related discipline

• Experience designing seismic bracing and supports

• Experience using Revit for structural design and coordination

• Familiarity with Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC) and the Whole Building Design Guide

• Prior DoD or federal project experience

• Experience working under ASME-NQA-1, MIL-Q-9858A, or ISO-9000 quality programs

• Experience developing CSI MasterFormat specifications or using SpecsIntact

Pay

$135,000 – $150,000 per year
