Job description

Washington College is seeking a Junior Geospatial Developer to support ongoing GIS initiatives and contribute to the development of geospatial tools, applications, and data solutions.

The Junior Geospatial Developer supports the design and implementation of scalable GIS system architectures in support of GIP’s sponsor-funded and partner-supported initiatives. The position contributes to application development, automation workflows, and integration of data and analytical outputs into web-based and enterprise geospatial systems.

The role participates in the software development lifecycle (SDLC), assisting with development, testing, deployment, and maintenance of geospatial applications. The Junior Geospatial Developer works under the guidance of senior engineering staff to ensure code quality, documentation consistency, and reliable system performance.

Essential Functions:

  • Assist in developing web-based and enterprise GIS applications across cloud and hosted environments.
  • Contribute to application architecture design and system integration under senior guidance.
  • Participate in the software development lifecycle, including requirements review, development, testing, and deployment support.
  • Integrate datasets and analytical outputs into dashboards, web applications, and geospatial services.
  • Develop and maintain APIs and automated geoprocessing workflows as assigned.
  • Follow established coding standards, documentation practices, and version control procedures.
  • Conduct testing and troubleshooting to improve system reliability and performance.
  • Collaborate with data specialist and analytics teams to support integrated solution delivery.
  • Maintain technical documentation for application features and workflows.
  • Support experiential learning activities by collaborating with student teams and interns on development tasks.

Qualifications: (Resume w/ Cover Letter Required)

  • Experience integrating spatial data into web applications.
  • Coursework or experience in API development, automation scripting, or related technical workflows.
  • Experience with or familiarity using JavaScript and Python in applied development environments.
  • Familiarity with cloud-based databases and backend platforms, such as Firebase.
  • Ability to create automated scripts, data workflows, or AI-assisted tools and agents to support project delivery.
  • Interest in creative problem-solving and system architecture, including practical, scalable solutions for geospatial and data-driven projects.
  • Familiarity with or willingness to learn server setup, maintenance, or deployment workflows.
  • Willingness to mentor interns; prior mentoring experience is a plus.

Salary: $50,000 - $55,000

Applicant must be authorized to work in the United States without employee sponsorship. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.
