SUMMARY

The Professional, Engineering - Avionics / Integrated Modular Avionics is responsible for supporting the design, development, integration, validation, and certification of highly integrated avionics control systems and distributed integrated modular architectures. This position works within the Avionics Center of Excellence to evaluate current and emerging flight deck technologies, define architecture requirements, support IMA application development and testing, and provide technical recommendations that enable efficient aircraft systems integration.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Develop knowledge and technical expertise related to Highly Integrated Control Systems and Distributed Integrated Modular Architectures
  • Support OEM requirement capture for IMA System Architecture, IMA Platforms, and Hosted Functions
  • Define roles and responsibilities associated with the IMA System Integrator, IMA Application Provider, and IMA Platform Provider
  • Apply DO-297 guidelines to support IMA development, safety, and certification plans in collaboration with internal stakeholders and suppliers
  • Use integrated tool chains provided by the platform provider to build and test IMA applications using virtual test benches and hardware-in-the-loop environments
  • Develop and implement methodologies and procedures to ensure architectures support safety, security, certification, and end-user requirements
  • Define standards for validation, verification, and functional testing
  • Collaborate with project leadership to communicate progress, design evolution, risks, issues, and roadblocks
  • Provide technical direction and recommendations during design reviews covering hardware, software, data network architecture, and development processes
  • Advise the organization on the impact of new regulations affecting avionics architecture
  • Interface with advanced design groups, discipline knowledge owners, fellows, suppliers, and engineering stakeholders to support technology alignment and knowledge sharing
  • Prepare technical documentation and reports capturing analyses, results, recommendations, and next steps
  • Operate to defined schedule and cost objectives
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to junior engineers and interns
QualificationsKnowledge
  • Advanced knowledge of Integrated Modular Avionics, highly integrated control systems, distributed systems architectures, and aircraft-level avionics integration
  • Knowledge of DO-297, AC 20-170, TSO-C153, TSO-C214, safety, development, and certification guidelines applicable to IMA systems
  • Strong understanding of aerospace communication protocols, including AFDX, ARINC 429, ARINC 664 Part 7, and ARINC 661
  • Knowledge of requirements development, validation, flow down, traceability, verification, and functional testing standards
  • Familiarity with networking communication protocols and related software development, including UDP/IP and Ethernet
  • Knowledge of embedded real-time operating systems, critical real-time embedded software, distributed systems, and model-based development tools is preferred
COMPETENCIES
  • Strong systems thinking and technical problem-solving within complex aircraft and avionics environments

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
  • University degree in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical field required
  • Minimum of eight years of experience with integrated systems architectures, including Integrated Modular Avionics required
  • Experience with complex aircraft systems development, integration, validation, verification, and certification required
  • Experience working with DO-297, AC 20-170, TSO-C153, and TSO-C214 guidelines requiredExperience with requirements development, validation, flow down, traceability, technical documentation, and design review support required
  • Experience with embedded real-time operating systems, such as VxWorks 653, critical real-time embedded systems, or distributed systems is an asset
  • Understanding of aircraft systems integration, ground and flight test activities, component qualification, reliability, safety requirements, and FAR Part 25 / CAR 525 certification processes is preferred
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Hybrid work schedule requiring three mandatory days per week onsite at the Bombardier office in Montreal
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working at a computer
