Job Summary:
The Junior Estimator supports the preparation of accurate and competitive cost estimates for heavy civil construction projects. Working under the guidance of Senior Estimators, this role assists with quantity takeoffs, subcontractor solicitation, cost analysis, document review, and bid preparation while developing technical estimating knowledge and industry expertise.
The Junior Estimator is an entry-level professional position designed to develop future estimating leaders through hands-on involvement in the preconstruction process.
  • Assist in full estimating process from beginning to submission.
  • Assist in preparing cost estimates for heavy civil construction projects.
  • Perform quantity takeoffs under the direction of senior estimating staff.
  • Solicit pricing from subcontractors, suppliers, and vendors.
  • Research current material pricing, labor rates, and equipment costs.
  • Help maintain estimating databases and historical cost information.
  • Assist in maintaining organized estimating files, bid documentation and associated software.
  • Flexible work attitude is willing to learn and take on tasks within construction however maybe outside strict estimating duties.
  • Review drawings, specifications, geotechnical reports, and contract documents to understand project scope.
  • Enter labor, equipment, material, and subcontractor pricing into estimating software.
  • Prepare bid documents and proposal packages.
  • Participate in pre-bid meetings and site visits when required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements and Education:
  • Basic understanding of construction methods and terminology.
  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team.
  • Willingness to learn heavy civil construction estimating practices.
  • Ability to learn construction drawings and specifications.
  • Ability to learn estimating software such as HCSS HeavyBid and Trimble Viewpoint Vista and other relevant pre-construction software such as Bluebeam.
  • 0-3 years of estimating, project engineering, construction management, or heavy civil construction experience.
  • Equivalent combination of education and field experience may be considered.

Preferred Requirements and Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Engineering Technology, or related field preferred.
  • Internship or co-op experience in construction is preferred.

Working Environment and Conditions:
  • Office-based with frequent computer work.
  • Occasional travel to project sites and pre-bid meetings.
  • Extended hours may be required during bid periods.
