Description
We are seeking a temporary part time STEM Facilitator to oversee STEM (science, technology, engineering, or mathematics) learning experiences for K-12 students and adult audiences at HCC's Challenger Learning Center (CLC) using space simulators, Discovery Lab, virtual platforms, and outreach workshops. This position will be responsible for maintaining a safe and orderly learning environment, and support positive visitor interactions by following established instructional procedures, customer service protocols, and facility care guidelines.
General responsibilities included, but not limited to:
  • Facilitate a range of pre-made hands-on STEM programming, including simulated space missions, STEM Challenges, virtual lessons, and other STEM activities.
  • Follow lesson plans to meet program objectives while adhering to timing benchmarks and safety protocols.
  • Uphold the CLC's customer service and facility care standards.
  • Support day-to-day operations and special projects at the CLC.
  • Apply classroom-management strategies to create an inclusive, safe, and productive learning environment for groups ranging from 10 to 30 students.
  • Directly interact with students during extended periods of standing and walking around the classroom, including kneeling or crouching to hear student questions spoken in a crowded space.
  • Engage students by offering encouragement, answering questions, and guiding independent learning across grade levels.
  • Guide students through sequenced instructions on classroom software, tablets, and web-based tools to ensure accurate navigation of each platform.
  • Troubleshoot technology issues, which may include accessing narrow spaces under desks to reach outlets and cables.

Requirements
  1. Associate degree or relevant experience.
  2. Successful teaching and/or presentation/performance experience.
  3. Excellent verbal communication skills.
  4. Proficiency in learning and using technical software.

Desired Qualifications
  1. Bachelor's degree.
  2. Valid Illinois professional educator or substitute teacher license.
  3. Teaching experience within a STEM discipline (science, technology, engineering, or mathematics).
  4. Experience working with middle school and/or junior high school students.
  5. Experience with virtual teaching.
