Entry-level programmers typically earn between $50,000 and $70,000 annually, depending on location, industry, and skills. Salaries can vary based on factors such as programming languages known, certifications, and the company's size and location.

Is AI replacing junior programmers?

AI tools can automate certain coding tasks, but junior programmers are essential for understanding project requirements, debugging, and developing complex features. AI is more likely to augment their work rather than replace them entirely, and skills in programming languages, problem-solving, and adapting to new tools remain important for junior programmers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Junior Programmer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior Programmer, you need a solid understanding of programming basics, strong problem-solving skills, and often a degree or certification in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with common programming languages such as Python, Java, or C++, and experience with version control systems like Git, are highly valuable. Attention to detail, willingness to learn, and effective communication set candidates apart in collaborative tech environments. These abilities enable Junior Programmers to contribute to diverse projects, adapt quickly, and work productively on development teams.

How do I get a programming job with no experience?

Junior programmers can start by building a portfolio of projects, contributing to open-source code, and learning relevant programming languages like Python or JavaScript. Gaining certifications or completing coding bootcamps can also demonstrate skills to employers, even without formal work experience.

What do junior programmers do?

Junior programmers write, test, and maintain code for software applications under the supervision of senior developers. They often work with programming languages like Java, Python, or C++, and use development tools such as IDEs and version control systems. Their tasks include debugging, implementing features, and learning best coding practices to build their skills.

What types of projects or tasks does a Junior Programmer typically work on?

Junior Programmers usually assist with writing, testing, and debugging code under the guidance of more senior developers. They often work on smaller modules of larger projects, fix bugs, and help with documentation or software updates. The work environment is typically team-based, which provides frequent opportunities to learn from experienced colleagues and tackle challenges together. As you gain experience, you may gradually take on more complex responsibilities and contribute directly to project planning and implementation.

What is a Junior Programmer job?

A Junior Programmer is an entry-level software developer responsible for writing, testing, and debugging code under the guidance of senior developers. They work on small tasks within a larger project, assisting in software development and maintenance. Junior Programmers often use programming languages like Java, Python, or JavaScript and collaborate with teams to build applications. This role helps them gain experience, improve coding skills, and learn industry best practices.

Job description

CNC Manufacturing Engineer/Programmer
East Peoria, IL - Full Time
Productive Resources (www.productiveresources.com) is seeking a candidate to be part of our engineering team for our customer's facility in East Peoria, IL. As a member of our team, the selected candidate will be a highly skilled and hands-on CNC Programmer / Machine Shop Lead to oversee CNC programming, machine setup, process development, and daily technical leadership within a high-mix, low-volume manufacturing environment. This role is ideal for a CNC expert who can take ownership of the machine shop, lead complex setups, mentor operators, and help scale operations during a significant expansion phase. The successful candidate will work directly from solid models and engineering drawings to design fixturing, generate CNC programs, prove out processes, and document production-ready operator instructions. This individual will serve as the technical authority for CNC machining while laying the foundation for future team growth.
This is a full-time position that is indefinite in duration with the opportunity of professional growth, and additional opportunities within our organization.
Duties:
  • Program, setup, and run CNC machines using Fanuc controls, including:
  • 5-axis machining centers
  • 3-axis machining centers
  • Upcoming 9-axis mill-turn machines
  • CNC camshaft grinding equipment
  • Develop complete machining processes from concept to production:
  • Review solid models and drawings
  • Design and implement fixturing
  • Generate and optimize G-code
  • Select tooling and cutting strategies
  • Prove out and validate machining processes
  • Create clear, detailed operator instructions to enable repeatable production by lower-level operators.
  • Lead machine setups and first-article runs for new and existing products.
  • Troubleshoot machining, tooling, and process issues to ensure quality and efficiency.
  • Mentor, train, and support CNC operators and junior programmers.
  • Collaborate with engineering, quality, and operations to improve throughput, reduce scrap, and optimize cycle times.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives in a lean, high-mix manufacturing environment.
  • Prepare the shop for rapid growth, including new equipment installations and increased production volumes.
  • Primary focus on engine internal components, with expansion into:
  • Increased engine production volumes
  • Fuel pump manufacturing
  • Advanced multi-axis machining and grinding

Requirements:
  • Extensive hands-on experience programming and setting up CNC machines
  • Strong expertise with Fanuc controls.
  • Proven experience with multi-axis machining (5-axis required; 9-axis mill-turn experience strongly preferred).
  • Ability to independently take a part from model/drawing to production-ready process.
  • Experience designing fixturing and selecting tooling for complex components.
  • Strong understanding of machining principles, tolerancing, and GD&T.
  • Demonstrated leadership or shop-floor mentoring experience.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, evolving manufacturing environment.
  • Programming on the pennant, shop floor operational experience.
  • 5 axis mill experience.

Preferred:
  • Background in engine components, rotating assemblies, or precision machined parts.
  • Experience with CNC grinding (camshaft grinding a plus).
  • Familiarity with multiple CNC control platforms beyond Fanuc.
  • Experience supporting shop growth, equipment additions, or facility expansions.
  • Manufacturing Engineering or technical degree, or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • CAM software such as Mastercam, SmartCAM, or similar.
  • CAD tools including SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or equivalent.
  • Experience with multiple CNC platforms and machine builders.
  • Fixture design and set-up design.
  • CAD to CAM programming experience, MasterCAM desirable.
  • Fanuc controller experience.

As a condition of employment consideration, Productive Resources conducts pre-employment screening, including a background check and drug test. In addition, an employment candidate is required to provide proof of identity and legal authority to work in the United States.
