Visiting Medical Officer Cardiologist, Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital (TRRH)
Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital is seeking a suitably qualified cardiologist to join a growing regional cardiology service. This role suits a clinician who can practise independently, contribute to a broad general cardiology workload, and help shape contemporary services across both inpatient and outpatient care. Mentoring opportunities are available for young consultants, and senior consultants are also welcome to apply. Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (Cardiology), and/or overseas trained specialist pathways is an essential criteria for this position.
Applicants may bring a wide range of interests and procedural skills. Experience in one or more of the following is advantageous but not essential: coronary angiography and catheterisation, coronary intervention, transoesophageal echocardiography, cardiac implantable electronic device implantation, CT coronary angiography, and cardiac MRI. The position can be tailored to the successful applicant's scope of practice and development goals, with opportunities to consolidate existing skills and expand practice over time.
The successful applicant will participate in the cardiology and acute care roster, including on call responsibilities and weekend ward rounds as required. They will provide comprehensive outpatient cardiology care for Tamworth and surrounding communities, with the option to deliver services through public outpatient clinics and or private consulting rooms. There are strong opportunities to develop a mixed public private practice, supported by an established referral base. You will join a collegial team of four local cardiologists, alongside a broad specialist workforce at TRRH. The service maintains close clinical links with tertiary Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery services in Newcastle, enabling shared care, streamlined referral pathways, and regular specialist-to-specialist collaboration.
The role includes a strong teaching and leadership component. The successful applicant will demonstrate the ability to mentor junior medical officers, including cardiology advanced trainees, and work effectively within a multidisciplinary team while maintaining high standards of independent clinical practice.
Tamworth Hospital is a large rural referral and major trauma hospital that supports a substantial regional catchment. It has a 24 hour emergency department and a broad medical and surgical base, which creates consistent exposure to acute cardiology, perioperative medicine, and complex comorbidity.
For cardiology, the hospital has a Coronary Care Unit and ICU and is supported by an onsite cardiac catheterisation laboratory, enabling genuine acute coronary and procedural pathways within a regional setting. The CCL performs over 1000 procedures annually, with a dedicated 6bed recovery area adjacent to the Coronary Care Unit, supporting efficient patient flow and close day to day collaboration across the cardiac service.
The service sits within a wider network across Hunter New England, with established escalation and shared care links to tertiary services in Newcastle including John Hunter Hospital for cardiothoracic surgery and higher complexity cases.
Mandatory requirements of this role include:

• Admitting, consultative, diagnostic, procedural, outpatient, telehealth and on-call services as determined and required by HNELHD
• Attendance and availability during rostered work hours and whilst on call including clinical handover, clinical supervision, teaching and for emergency and routine care as determined and required by HNELHD
• Provision of education and research as determined and required by HNELHD

1. A primary medical degree registrable with AHPRA and Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (Cardiology), and/or overseas trained specialist pathways.
2. Evidence of being a medical expert, demonstrated by recent and comprehensive experience in Cardiology
3. Evidence of being a scholar, maintains medical professional development and has the ability to assist other staff, including trainees in the acquisition and development of knowledge.
4. Evidence of being a skilled communicator, including both oral and written skills, communicating with patients, students, other health professionals and the public.
5. Evidence of being a collaborator, including the ability to network and operate within an interdisciplinary framework and to work with other stakeholders in a variety of settings.
6. Evidence of being a manager, including ability to be flexible and cope with a changing health system, past leadership and management experience and previous safety and quality improvement activities.
7. Evidence of being a professional, including continued professional development, peer review and other forms of clinical governance
8. Evidence of being an advocate, including contributions to improving individual and societal health
