Position Title: Senior Systems Administrator
Location: Birmingham, AL - Hybrid after 90 days
Position Status: Full Time
About the Opportunity
We're seeking an experienced Senior Systems Administrator to join our enterprise IT team and play a critical role in the design, administration, optimization, and support of our infrastructure environment. This position is ideal for a highly skilled systems professional who thrives on solving complex technical challenges, improving system reliability, and driving infrastructure modernization initiatives.
As a senior member of the team, you will support and enhance a diverse technology ecosystem including Windows and Linux servers, VMware virtualization, Microsoft 365, Active Directory, cloud infrastructure, enterprise storage, and network-connected systems. You'll also serve as an escalation point for critical technical issues while mentoring junior team members.
What You'll Do
Infrastructure Administration & Operations
  • Administer, maintain, and optimize enterprise Windows and Linux server environments.
  • Manage VMware vSphere/ESXi infrastructure, including configuration, maintenance, performance tuning, and troubleshooting.
  • Support enterprise storage solutions, server hardware, virtualization platforms, and core infrastructure services.
  • Create and maintain system architecture diagrams, infrastructure documentation, and operational procedures.
  • Monitor system health, performance, availability, and capacity to ensure business continuity and reliability.

Microsoft & Identity Services
  • Administer and support Microsoft 365 services, including Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, and related technologies.
  • Manage Active Directory, Group Policy, user provisioning, permissions, and identity access controls.
  • Implement security best practices for authentication, authorization, and endpoint management.

Architecture, Cloud & Technical Leadership
  • Assist with infrastructure design, platform improvements, and technology roadmaps.
  • Support cloud-based solutions and services across IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS environments.
  • Evaluate system dependencies and application integrations to improve scalability, performance, and reliability.
  • Participate in disaster recovery, backup, and business continuity planning efforts.
  • Advanced Support & Collaboration
  • Serve as a Tier 3 escalation resource for complex infrastructure and endpoint issues.
  • Lead infrastructure upgrades, migrations, deployments, and system implementations.
  • Collaborate with project managers, developers, business stakeholders, and IT teams on strategic initiatives.
  • Mentor and guide junior administrators and technical support personnel.

What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in systems administration, infrastructure engineering, or enterprise IT operations.
  • Strong experience administering Windows Server and/or Linux operating systems in enterprise environments.
  • Hands-on experience with VMware vSphere/ESXi and virtualization technologies.
  • Experience supporting Microsoft 365 and Active Directory environments.
  • Proficiency with PowerShell, Bash, or other scripting languages used for automation and system administration.
  • Experience troubleshooting complex infrastructure, application, and performance-related issues.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure or AWS.
  • Knowledge of networking concepts including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, routing, switching, firewalls, and network security.
  • Experience with SAN/storage technologies, backup solutions, and disaster recovery planning.
  • Exposure to infrastructure automation, configuration management, and monitoring tools.
  • Project leadership experience and a demonstrated ability to mentor team members.
  • Familiarity with enterprise security frameworks, vulnerability remediation, and infrastructure hardening practices.
