Position Description
Summary of Duties:
  • Reports directly to the Director of Estimating or Senior Estimator. The Junior Estimator is responsible for working in collaboration with the estimating staff in supporting the company's annual booking goal and working to maximize profitability. The Junior Estimator will assist in the preparation of estimates for assigned project(s) of varying size and complexity, for one or more disciplines, including the review and analysis of applicable project plans and specifications. The Junior Estimator will be part of a team environment and may work with other team members based on bid needs. The Estimator may participate in business development, industry events, and building customer relations, while conducting business in a professional manner, striving for team excellence, and emphasizing Faulconer's Core Values at all times.

Position Requirements
Essential Functions: Job duties include but are not limited to the following list below.
Estimating: 90%
  • Follow in-house procedures for estimating. (Bid Books, Take-Off Forms, Sub/Supplier Solicitation, Minority Solicitation, Etc.)
  • Prepare material takeoffs by accurately calculating and quantify materials needed to deliver proposed scope of work.
  • Engage with and solicit proposals from vendors and subcontractors. Providing all necessary project information (plans, specifications, contracts, etc.) and respond to any questions or requests for information from vendors and subcontractors.
  • Prepare estimates by inputting quantity and cost information to accurately quantify and price the labor, equipment, materials and subcontractors needed to perform the work.
  • Review proposal specifications, drawings, geotechnical information, and other information as necessary to determine scope of work and contents of estimate.
  • Attend site visits and pre-bid meetings as necessary.
  • Assist in the writing of detailed scopes of work including pertinent terms and conditions, inclusions, and exclusions for bid proposals.
  • Interface with Owners and Architects/Engineers as necessary to gain clarity.
  • Follow up on submitted proposals and be prepared to discuss in weekly estimating meeting.
  • Support Operations Staff as required
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of relevant software, i.e. takeoff, estimate/bid creation, scheduling, subcontractor solicitation, office management, customer relationship management
  • When feasible, visit current project sites to obtain knowledge of productions and means and methods of construction activities utilized by field personnel.
  • Assist with creation of yearly Business Plan. Market research (lead sources, media, publications, interaction with GC/Owner/Architect/Engineer...).
  • Keep up to date with current market trends (competitors, who is building what, who does most of a GC's work...)
  • Maintain CRM database with relevant information.

Business Development: 5%
  • Engage in Business Development activities when requested.
  • Interface with Owners, GC's, Architects/Engineers, and other contacts to develop future bid opportunities.
  • Research future opportunities and projects by personal contacts or online search engines.
  • Attend relevant industry events and participate in business development with Owners, Architects/Engineers, vendors and other contractors.
  • Encouraged to take part, participate, and be engaged in industry or relevant trade group association committees, boards, etc.

Operations: 5%
  • Assist in the preparation of Hand-Off Meeting materials with Project Managers & Field Staff
  • Provide estimating and takeoff support for change orders as needed
  • Participate in project "Kick-Off" meetings with Operations Staff
  • Participate in Post Project Review Meetings with Operations Staff

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, construction management, or related field experience preferred.
  • Willingness to learn estimating procedures and techniques, industry practices, standards, and processes.
  • Ability to read and understand construction drawings, geotechnical reports, and specifications. (Or willingness to learn these skills.)
  • Ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality at all times.
  • Willingness and ability to occasionally work long hours to finalize proposals and bids.
  • Ability to work in front of a computer for long periods of time.
  • Ability to travel to prebid meetings/site visits. (Overnight visits may be required)
  • Attendance at mandatory company events in NC and VA as needed
  • Preferred proficiency with Excel, Word, and PDF applications.
  • Experience in HeavyBid, AGTEK, and Smartbid a plus.
