The main difference between a Junior Java Developer and a Java Developer lies in experience, responsibilities, and independence. Junior Java Developers are typically entry-level, focusing on learning and supporting tasks, while Java Developers have more experience and handle complex development projects independently.

Is Java still useful in 2026?

Java remains a widely used programming language for developing enterprise applications, Android apps, and backend systems in 2026. Junior Java Developers can benefit from its stability, extensive libraries, and strong community support, making it a valuable skill in the software industry. Knowledge of frameworks like Spring and tools such as Maven or Gradle enhances job prospects.

What are Junior Java Developers?

Junior Java Developers are entry-level software engineers who specialize in building and maintaining applications using the Java programming language. They typically work under the supervision of more experienced developers and are responsible for writing code, debugging, and participating in code reviews. Their tasks may also include testing software, learning new frameworks, and assisting with the design and implementation of features. Junior Java Developers usually have foundational knowledge of Java and related technologies, and they are eager to develop their skills through hands-on experience.

Can I learn Java in 3 months?

Junior Java developers can acquire foundational skills in Java within three months with consistent study, practice, and hands-on projects. However, mastering advanced concepts, frameworks, and real-world application typically requires longer experience and ongoing learning.

Which pays more, C++ or Java?

For a Junior Java Developer, salaries for C++ and Java roles can vary based on industry, location, and experience, but generally, C++ positions tend to offer higher starting salaries due to its use in high-performance applications like gaming and finance. However, Java remains widely used in enterprise environments with competitive pay. Both skills are valuable, and salary differences may depend on specific job requirements and demand in the job market.

What Does a Junior Java Developer Do?

Junior Java developers are entry-level programmers who are part of a team of coders and developers. They work on both front-end and back-end codes to build an application. Being a junior Java developer requires extensive knowledge of coding and the program language JavaScript to develop and troubleshoot products. As a junior Java developer, you run tests to pinpoint errors, migrate code and data, and ensure the program is integrated with other company developments.

What are some common challenges a Junior Java Developer might face during their first year, and how can they overcome them?

Junior Java Developers often encounter challenges such as understanding large codebases, adapting to agile development processes, and managing task priorities. To overcome these hurdles, it’s helpful to proactively seek mentorship from senior developers, regularly review documentation, and participate in code reviews. Effective communication with team members also accelerates learning and helps clarify requirements or technical uncertainties. Embracing continuous learning through online resources and hands-on projects will further strengthen your skills and confidence.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Junior Java Developer, and why are they important?

A Junior Java Developer should have a solid understanding of Java programming, object-oriented principles, and basic software development concepts, often supported by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp. Familiarity with tools such as IntelliJ IDEA or Eclipse, version control systems like Git, and frameworks like Spring Boot is typically expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are important soft skills in this role. These competencies enable efficient code development, smooth collaboration, and the ability to quickly adapt to new technologies and project requirements.

Will AI replace Java devs?

AI is unlikely to fully replace Java developers, as they require problem-solving, design, and understanding of complex systems that AI cannot fully replicate. Instead, AI tools can assist Java developers by automating repetitive tasks and improving productivity, making their roles more efficient. Continuous learning and adapting to new technologies remain important for Java developers to stay relevant in the evolving tech landscape.

Job description

ABOUT THE TEAM

Anduril's Air & Missile Defense Radar team develops cutting-edge tracking algorithms and software systems that detect, track, and characterize airborne threats in real-time. Working in small, focused teams, our software engineers design and implement sophisticated tracking solutions that protect lives and critical assets. Our work spans the full spectrum-from developing novel multi-target tracking algorithms to building high-performance distributed systems that process massive amounts of sensor data in milliseconds.

ABOUT THE JOB

We are seeking a Software Engineer to bridge the gap between software engineers working on tactical code and the DevSecOps engineers maintaining cloud infrastructure. You will build and maintain the secure automation infrastructure that powers our radar tracking deployments, create testing and analysis tools to support tactical software, and accelerate developer workflows. You'll design CI/CD pipelines, architect core tooling, implement Infrastructure-as-Code, and establish continuous compliance workflows that enable our engineering teams to deploy updates rapidly while meeting stringent DoD and IC security requirements.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Design and implement secure CI/CD pipelines, enabling automated build, test, and deployment of radar tracking software across multiple enclaves
  • Collaborate with software engineers to optimize the build and test processes, reduce deployment friction, and integrate security controls early in the development lifecycle
  • Work alongside tactical software developers to identify pain points and process deficiencies and architect durable solutions
  • Build Infrastructure-as-Code frameworks (Terraform, Ansible, or similar) to provision and configure development, test, and production environments that meet DISA STIG and NIST 800-53 requirements
  • Automate security compliance workflows, including STIG scanning, vulnerability assessment, configuration validation, and compliance reporting for continuous monitoring
  • Develop containerization and orchestration solutions (Docker, Kubernetes) tailored for classified networks with appropriate security hardening
  • Create monitoring and logging infrastructure to support security operations, troubleshooting, and incident response
  • Partner with system administrators and ISSM/ISSO personnel to ensure deployed systems meet customer security requirements

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5+ years of experience and a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Strong hands-on experience with CI/CD tools such as GitLab CI, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or similar
  • Proficiency in a variety of programming languages such as Python and C++.
  • Understanding of software engineering fundamentals: design patterns, testing, version control, and debugging
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure-as-Code using Terraform, Ansible, Puppet, Chef, or similar tools
  • Working knowledge of containerization technologies (Docker) and orchestration platforms (Kubernetes, Docker Swarm)
  • Understanding of Linux system administration, networking, and scripting (Python, Bash)
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Top Secret SCI security clearance

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience deploying and maintaining systems in classified DoD or IC environments
  • Hands-on experience with ATO processes, STIG implementation, and continuous monitoring for accredited systems
  • Proficient in Python package development
  • Familiarity with SCAP-compliant scanning tools (OpenSCAP, Nessus, ACAS) and automated compliance frameworks
  • Experience with secure software supply chain practices, artifact signing, and software bill of materials (SBOM)
  • Knowledge of zero-trust architectures and microsegmentation in Kubernetes environments
  • Experience with GitOps workflows and declarative infrastructure management
  • Proficiency with observability and monitoring tools (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK stack, Splunk)
  • Understanding of PKI, certificate management, and secrets management solutions (Vault, AWS Secrets Manager)
  • Experience with air-gapped or disconnected network deployments
  • Familiarity with DoD security frameworks (RMF, NIST 800-53, DISA STIGs)
  • Active U.S. Top Secret SCI clearance
  • Relevant certifications such as Security+, CISSP, or AWS/Azure security certifications

We request transcripts as part of the early application process to understand your academic background and how your coursework supports the skills deemed critical for the role. Transcripts help us assess your technical and analytical abilities, complementing our interview process in which we also evaluate practical experience and cultural fit.
