Junior Graphics Programmer information

What does a junior graphics programmer do?

A Junior Graphics Programmer is responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of visual elements in software, such as video games or simulations. They typically work under the guidance of senior graphics programmers to write and optimize code for rendering graphics, implementing shaders, and ensuring efficient use of hardware resources. Their tasks may also include debugging graphics issues, learning new graphics APIs, and collaborating with other team members to achieve visual targets. This entry-level role is a great way to gain experience in computer graphics and related technologies.

What types of projects and technologies do junior graphics programmers typically work on in their early career?

As a Junior Graphics Programmer, you’ll often start by supporting senior developers with tasks such as implementing rendering features, optimizing shaders, and debugging graphics pipelines. You may work with technologies like DirectX, OpenGL, or Vulkan, as well as graphics engines such as Unity or Unreal Engine. Early projects usually involve collaborating closely with artists and designers to ensure visual elements are integrated efficiently and look as intended. This role offers a great opportunity to learn best practices in real-time rendering and to develop problem-solving skills through hands-on experience with cutting-edge graphics techniques.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior graphics programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior Graphics Programmer, you generally need a solid understanding of computer graphics principles, proficiency in C++ or similar languages, and a relevant degree such as computer science or software engineering. Familiarity with graphics APIs like DirectX or OpenGL, shader languages (HLSL/GLSL), and version control systems like Git is typically expected. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you stand out in collaborative development environments. These skills and qualifications are essential for creating visually compelling, high-performance graphics solutions that meet industry standards.

Job description

We are seeking a Senior SCADA Engineer to independently design, develop, and deliver advanced graphical user interfaces for BAS, BMS, EMS, SCADA, and EPMS systems. This role is responsible for complex graphics packages, technical quality, project coordination, and the development of reusable visualization standards that improve consistency across projects.

The Senior SCADA Engineer works closely with project managers, controls engineers, field technicians, commissioning teams, and clients to translate operational requirements into modern, intuitive, and high-performance graphics. This position also provides technical guidance to junior team members and supports troubleshooting, quality control, system expansion, and long-term customer service.

The ideal candidate has strong experience in building automation, HVAC systems, SCADA visualization, graphical interface development, and the execution of multiple concurrent projects in commercial and mission-critical environments.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Independently design, develop, test, and deliver sophisticated DDC and SCADA graphics within allocated project hours and established schedules.
  • Create visually appealing, dynamic, intuitive, and high-performance graphical interfaces that comply with client requirements and Divcon standards.
  • Lead graphics development for complex commercial, industrial, and mission-critical building automation projects.
  • Translate control sequences, points lists, mechanical plans, equipment submittals, and project specifications into accurate operator graphics.
  • Develop graphics for HVAC systems, central utility plants, electrical distribution systems, lighting systems, power monitoring, and other integrated building systems.
  • Coordinate with project managers, controls engineers, programmers, field technicians, and commissioning personnel to confirm system functionality and visualization requirements.
  • Review project scope, identify missing information, and resolve graphics-related design questions before they affect project schedules.
  • Complete quality control reviews of graphics packages, including navigation, point mapping, equipment status, alarms, trends, overrides, setpoints, and system summaries.
  • Identify and report technical, quality, scheduling, and scope-related risks to project managers and engineering management in a timely manner.
  • Provide technical problem-solving expertise for graphics performance, point integration, display logic, navigation, responsive layouts, and end-user usability.
  • Support graphics deployment, checkout, startup, commissioning, and project closeout activities.
  • Troubleshoot graphics-related issues remotely and in coordination with field personnel.
  • Manage multiple concurrent projects while maintaining consistent quality, responsiveness, and delivery performance.
  • Maintain timely communication and follow-up with assigned project managers and project stakeholders.
  • Ensure graphics packages are delivered to jobsites and commissioning teams in accordance with project schedules.
  • Maintain complete and accurate project documentation, revision histories, backups, and release packages.
  • Develop and maintain graphics libraries, templates, symbols, naming conventions, navigation standards, and reusable components.
  • Recommend improvements to graphics development processes, engineering workflows, documentation practices, and quality control procedures.
  • Mentor junior graphics specialists and engineers by providing technical guidance, design feedback, troubleshooting assistance, and platform training.
  • Review the work of less-experienced team members and provide actionable feedback before project release.
  • Support system expansions, modernization projects, software upgrades, and long-term customer service requirements.
  • Participate in internal technical reviews, lessons-learned discussions, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain awareness of emerging visualization technologies, industry standards, and user-interface design practices relevant to building automation and SCADA systems.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate degree in engineering technology, automation, controls, computer-aided design, graphic design, information technology, or a related field preferred.
  • Four or more years of experience with building automation, DDC, SCADA, BMS, EMS, or EPMS systems.
  • Three or more years of experience developing graphical interfaces for building automation or industrial control applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently complete complex graphics projects from initial design through deployment and closeout.
  • Strong understanding of BAS, BMS, EMS, DDC, SCADA, and EPMS system architecture and operational requirements.
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, mechanical equipment, central plants, electrical systems, and building automation principles.
  • Ability to interpret mechanical plans, control drawings, sequences of operation, points lists, equipment schedules, and technical submittals.
  • Proficiency with graphic design applications such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, or equivalent tools.
  • Strong technical troubleshooting and analytical problem-solving skills.
  • Strong quality-control skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple projects with competing deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining effective communication with project teams and management.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to mentor and support less-experienced technical team members.
  • High degree of integrity, accountability, professionalism, and mature judgment.
