What is a junior FPGA?

A Junior FPGA job involves designing, developing, and testing FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array) circuits and systems under the guidance of senior engineers. Responsibilities typically include writing HDL (VHDL/Verilog) code, performing simulations, debugging hardware, and optimizing performance. Junior FPGA engineers often work in industries such as telecommunications, aerospace, automotive, and consumer electronics. They collaborate with hardware and software teams to implement digital logic solutions. Strong analytical skills, proficiency in FPGA design tools, and a solid understanding of digital electronics are essential for this role.

What types of projects or tasks will I typically work on as a junior FPGA?

As a Junior FPGA, you will often assist in designing and developing digital circuits and systems using hardware description languages, participate in simulation and verification activities, and help with board-level debugging and testing. You may collaborate closely with senior engineers on implementing and optimizing algorithms for FPGAs, as well as update documentation and contribute to code reviews. The work typically involves a mix of independent tasks and group projects within a dynamic team environment. This hands-on experience will help you build your skills, understand the full development lifecycle, and prepare you for career growth into more advanced hardware engineering roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the junior FPGA position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior FPGA, you need a solid understanding of digital logic design, VHDL or Verilog programming, and a relevant degree in electrical or computer engineering. Familiarity with FPGA development tools such as Xilinx Vivado or Intel Quartus, as well as experience using simulation and debugging software, is highly valued. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively are important soft skills in this role. These skills enable you to efficiently design, test, and implement FPGA solutions while working effectively within engineering teams.

Our solutions enable customers worldwide to measure greenhouse gases, environmental pollutants, industrial process gases, and isotopic compositions with unmatched sensitivity and accuracy.
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior FPGA Engineer to join our engineering team and contribute to the development of next-generation analytical instruments and embedded platforms.
Position Summary
The Senior FPGA Engineer will play a critical role in the design, development, and verification of FPGA-based systems used in Picarro's high-performance analytical instruments. This individual will collaborate closely with hardware, firmware, systems, and software engineers to develop robust digital designs that enable precise signal acquisition, processing, control, and communication.
The ideal candidate has extensive experience in FPGA architecture, digital signal processing, high-speed interfaces, and embedded system development, along with a strong desire to solve complex engineering challenges.
Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and implement FPGA architectures for advanced instrumentation platforms.
  • Develop RTL code using Verilog, SystemVerilog, or VHDL.
  • Implement and optimize digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms in FPGA hardware.
  • Design and integrate high-speed communication interfaces, including PCIe, Ethernet, SPI, I²C, UART, and SerDes-based protocols.
  • Collaborate with electrical engineers during schematic reviews and board bring-up activities.
  • Develop timing constraints and perform timing closure for complex FPGA designs.
  • Conduct simulation, verification, debugging, and validation of FPGA functionality.
  • Support laboratory testing and troubleshooting using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and other test equipment.
  • Integrate FPGA designs with embedded processors and firmware components.
  • Participate in architecture reviews and contribute to technical roadmap planning.
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership on FPGA-related projects.
