What is a junior ETO?

A Junior Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) is an entry-level role in the maritime industry responsible for assisting with the maintenance and repair of a vessel's electrical and electronic systems. They work under the supervision of senior ETOs to ensure the proper functioning of navigation, communication, and automation systems. Junior ETOs also help troubleshoot electrical issues and perform routine inspections to maintain safety standards. This role is crucial for ensuring the smooth operation of a ship's electrical infrastructure and provides valuable experience for career advancement in the field.

What are the typical responsibilities of a junior ETO onboard a vessel?

As a Junior ETO, you are generally responsible for assisting in the operation, maintenance, and repair of electrical and electronic systems on board, including power generation, communication equipment, and automation controls. Your day-to-day tasks may include troubleshooting faults, conducting routine inspections, and supporting senior ETOs or the chief engineer with more complex repairs. You’ll often work as part of a broader engineering team, collaborating with deck officers and technical crew to ensure all systems run smoothly and safely. This role offers valuable hands-on experience and is a stepping stone to more advanced technical positions within the maritime industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the junior ETO position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior ETO (Electro Technical Officer), you need a foundational understanding of marine electrical systems, electronics, and automation, typically supported by an engineering degree or relevant certification. Familiarity with PLCs, electrical testing tools, and maritime communication systems is often required, along with STCW endorsements. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in multicultural teams are crucial soft skills for this role.
