Is 40 too late for data science?

For a Junior Data Visualization role, age is not a barrier; many professionals transition into data roles later in life. Success depends on skills, relevant training, and experience with tools like Tableau or Power BI, rather than age alone.

What is the difference between Junior Data Visualization vs Data Analyst?

AspectJunior Data VisualizationData Analyst

Data Analysts perform broader data analysis, including statistical work and reporting, with more advanced skills and experience. While both roles involve data visualization, Data Analysts typically handle more complex analysis tasks and data management.

What are Junior Data Visualization professionals?

Junior Data Visualization professionals are entry-level specialists who assist in transforming raw data into graphical representations like charts, graphs, and dashboards. They typically work with tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or Excel to help organizations interpret data and make informed decisions. Their responsibilities often include preparing datasets, creating basic visualizations, and supporting more senior team members on larger projects. These roles require foundational knowledge of data analysis, visualization best practices, and sometimes basic programming skills.

What types of projects can a Junior Data Visualization specialist expect to work on, and how do they typically collaborate with other teams?

As a Junior Data Visualization specialist, you can expect to work on projects that involve transforming raw data into clear, interactive visuals such as charts, dashboards, and infographics. These projects often support business teams in making data-driven decisions. You'll frequently collaborate with data analysts, engineers, and business stakeholders to understand data requirements and ensure your visualizations effectively communicate key insights. It's common to participate in team meetings, gather feedback, and make iterative improvements to your work. Over time, you'll gain exposure to different data tools and business domains, which can open up opportunities for advancement.

Will AI replace data analyst?

AI tools can automate routine data analysis tasks, but data analysts are essential for interpreting complex data, making strategic decisions, and providing context. Junior Data Visualization roles often involve working with AI and data tools, but human expertise remains critical for nuanced insights and effective communication of findings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Junior Data Visualization specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior Data Visualization specialist, you need a solid understanding of data analysis, basic statistics, and visual storytelling, typically supported by a degree in a quantitative field. Familiarity with tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or Python libraries like Matplotlib and Seaborn is often required, alongside knowledge of Excel and SQL. Strong attention to detail, creativity, and effective communication skills help you convey complex data insights clearly to diverse audiences. These abilities are crucial for transforming raw data into actionable insights that drive informed business decisions.

Can I be a data analyst with no experience?

While some entry-level data analyst positions may accept candidates with little or no experience, having skills in data visualization tools like Tableau or Power BI, along with basic knowledge of Excel and SQL, can improve your chances. Gaining relevant certifications or completing projects can also help demonstrate your abilities to employers.

Is data visualization a good career?

Data visualization is a growing field within data analysis and business intelligence, with roles like Junior Data Visualization specialists in high demand. It requires skills in tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or Python, and often benefits from a background in data analysis or design. Job description

YOUR POSITION WITH TNC

Housed within The Nature Conservancy's Resilient Watersheds Strategy, the Nature for Water Facility ('N4W') is a technical assistance outfit that provides hand-in-hand support to local champions seeking to develop watershed investment programs ('WIPs'). Since its inception in early 2022, N4W has worked with 35+ prospective and existing WIPs worldwide to help them define, structure, and launch their local programs. N4W also provides funding for pilot activities and scale-up support to selected WIPs. For additional background on N4W, please see the About, Services, and Portfolio sections of the N4W website.

The Junior Data Analyst/Developer will be a critical part of N4W's Program Intelligence team, focusing on building and managing our data collection, processing, and analysis pipelines. The Program Intelligence platform enables N4W to gather and make sense of diverse information from a range of on-the-ground partner programs (Partners) and thereby produce relevant intelligence findings that support those Partners' effectiveness and growth, as well as focus on where investments can maximize long-term conservation impact.

The location for this position is flexible within countries in North America, Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Europe where The Nature Conservancy is a registered NGO and has an established office (in North America these are USA, Canada; in Latin America these are Argentina, Belize, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru; in the Caribbean these are The Bahamas, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands; in Africa these are Angola, Gabon, Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia; in Europe these are Croatia, Belgium, Germany, and the UK). Salary ranges will vary depending on the selected candidate's location.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

N4W's Program Intelligence team is focused on understanding (1) what kind of impact we are helping drive on the ground, (2) what we are learning from individual Partners that can be mainstreamed across our N4W team, TNC, and the broader water sector; and (3) where N4W and TNC should be strategically investing to maximize impact over the long term. Our systems also provides the operational reporting and day-to-day analytical needs for our Partners to be able to confidently raise, effectively deploy, and appropriately report on multi-million dollar funding streams.

The key focus for this Junior Data Analyst / Developer role will be supporting the expansion and management of a central Program Intelligence system which uses KoboToolbox, ArcGIS online, Python, and the Databricks Platform to ingest, store, and process data, and then visualizes outputs in Tableau and Power BI. The functions and outputs of this Program Intelligence system are critical for several parties, such as Partners, funders, TNC leadership, and N4W scientists and economists. Many of these parties receive bespoke output tables or dashboard visualizations from the system, which the Junior Data Analyst / Developer will help build. For example, these include N4W's 'Impact Dashboard', which is used to report to funders, and 'Decision Support Systems', which are used by Partners.

The Junior Data Analyst / Developer will also work closely with N4W colleagues who use tools such as SageMaker, MATLAB, and Microsoft Excel to provide key inputs to the Program Intelligence system. The Program Intelligence team includes one full-time senior developer, a team lead, N4W's science technical director, and several other N4W colleagues who contribute to Program Intelligence with between 20-40% of their time.

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

  • [Back-end] Ensuring smooth alignment with, and integration of, data capture and storage systems, templates and procedures.
  • [Processing] Building and managing data processing pipelines, primarily using Python code within Databricks, to update and analyse data.
  • [Front-end] Owning the building and updating of visualization suites using Power BI or similar software, as well as
  • [Maintenance] Helping troubleshoot bugs across the entire Program Intelligence platform, maintaining high levels of data quality, and adding or updating features for existing processes as required.
  • [Continuous Improvement]: Thinking systematically across all the programs supported by the Program Intelligence Platform and identifying ways to streamline or improve upon the existing build.

Because of the geographic distribution of other core team members, the role requires being available between 13:00 - 16:00 UTC on Monday - Thursday (7:00-10:00 am Colorado Time / 2:00-5:00 pm London Time / 4:00-7:00 pm Nairobi Time), with more flexible hours on Friday. This is a 2-year, term-limited position, with opportunities for extension based on performance and funding availability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, information systems, or a related field and one year of progressive experience.
  • Experience in relational database concepts and query tools such as SQL, and/or experience performing advanced data analysis/modeling in Excel.
  • Experience in a scripting language such as Python.
  • Experience with visualization or dashboarding tools (such as Power BI).
  • Experience writing and speaking in the English language.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 2+ years working in business intelligence, data analytics, data engineering, or data science.
  • Experience balancing work across concurrent large and complex projects.
  • Experience combining and maintaining diverse datasets, as well as presenting analyses pulling from these datasets to cross-functional audiences.
