Job description

Role Description

The Controller is a full-time, hybrid position based in Irvine, CA. This role oversees the firm’s accounting operations, including general ledger management, accounts payable and receivable, payroll review, insurance, cash management, and trust account compliance. The Controller prepares and analyzes financial statements, budgets, cash flow forecasts, and management reports to support leadership in decision-making. Daily responsibilities include monitoring internal controls, banking, ensuring an accurate and timely month-end and year-end close, coordinating with clients on audit requirements, and maintaining compliance with applicable regulations and firm policies. The Controller also leads and mentors accounting staff, implements process improvements, and partners with leadership on financial planning and operational efficiency initiatives.

The position will have frequent interactions with all levels of employees from ownership and senior management to junior-level staff.  The ideal candidate will have both strong verbal and written communication skills.

Qualifications

  • Strong accounting and finance expertise, including GAAP knowledge, general ledger management, and financial reporting.
  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management to support strategic decision-making.
  • Proficiency with accounting software and advanced skills in Excel and financial analysis tools.
  • Background in managing accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll review, and reconciliations, ideally in a professional services or law firm environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, implement, and monitor internal controls, compliance procedures, and audit readiness.
  • Leadership experience supervising accounting staff, delegating responsibilities, and developing team capabilities.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and time-management skills, with a focus on accuracy and meeting deadlines.
  • Clear, professional communication skills for working with attorneys, firm leadership, staff, and external partners.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or equivalent certification is highly preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively in a hybrid environment in Irvine, CA, maintaining confidentiality and sound judgment.

College Degree is preferred. Following a reasonable onboarding and training period, this position will transition to a hybrid schedule, with an expectation of 2–3 days per week in the office. Pay range is generally $100k - $120k annually based on experience. Please note that employment requires a background check prior to initial start date.
