Junior Building Operator information

What is a junior building operator?

Junior Building Operators are entry-level professionals responsible for assisting with the daily operations, maintenance, and repair of building systems such as heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), lighting, and plumbing. They typically work under the supervision of senior building operators or facility managers to ensure that buildings remain safe, comfortable, and efficient for occupants. Their duties may include conducting routine inspections, responding to service requests, and performing basic repairs or preventative maintenance. This role provides valuable hands-on experience for those looking to advance in the building operations or facility management field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior building operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Junior Building Operator, you need foundational knowledge of building systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing) and a high school diploma or technical certification in building operations. Familiarity with building automation systems (BAS), maintenance management software, and basic hand and power tools is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help in responding to facility issues and coordinating with tenants or contractors. These competencies ensure efficient building operations, safety, and occupant satisfaction.

What are some common challenges faced by a junior building operator during the first year on the job?

As a Junior Building Operator, one common challenge is quickly learning the complex systems within a building, such as HVAC, electrical, and plumbing. You'll need to balance hands-on troubleshooting with following detailed protocols, often under the guidance of senior operators. Adapting to shift work and responding to unexpected maintenance issues can also be demanding. However, regular collaboration with experienced team members and ongoing training can help you build confidence and develop essential skills.

Job description

Description

Join our team and what we'll accomplish together

TELUS Health Virtual Care is a rapidly growing division of TELUS Health. We develop and operate a next-generation telemedicine service that lets Canadians access primary care and other healthcare services through an app. With nearly 2 million members across Canada, we're reimagining the doctor-patient relationship, leveraging technology to make Canadian healthcare more accessible, compassionate, and patient-centered.

As our team of 40+ developers and designers scales to support the growing scope and complexity of the healthcare services offered by TELUS Health, we're looking for experienced developers with strong TypeScript expertise to help lead the design and delivery of features that matter.

Our existing frontend applications are all developed in TypeScript/React, and many of our backend systems are deployed as TypeScript/Node microservices.

As an L3 software developer, you will

  • Lead the design and delivery of well-scoped features and components across our TypeScript-based frontend and backend applications, owning them from start to finish

  • Tackle ambiguous, open-ended problems and identify the right solutions, keeping customer needs and product input front of mind

  • Help your squad work more effectively by breaking down, scoping, and coordinating work, and by unblocking conflicting or stalled efforts

  • Mentor and coach more junior engineers, delivering some of your impact through the people you support

  • Perform system design for inter-dependent modules and features, surfacing technical, privacy, or security implications early

  • Triage complex production defects quickly and build the observability and controls that keep our code quality high

  • Keep the patient and clinician experience front and center, making sure changes to scheduling and core services protect ongoing consults and continuity of care

  • Collaborate across teams and with cross-functional stakeholders to align on decisions, clarify ambiguity, and reach positive outcomes

You should be the kind of person who
  • Is confident and competent across the full stack and can work on features of any size in multiple codebases

  • Draws on experience to solve problems effectively, delivering high-quality work grounded in good practice and non-functional principles (performance, security, reliability)

  • Stays on top of technical advances and is comfortable championing new technologies or practices, helping others adopt them

  • Communicates clearly, tailoring the message to the audience and keeping the right people informed and aligned

  • Builds strong relationships across teams, gives and receives feedback gracefully, and disagrees and commits when needed

  • Is comfortable with uncertainty and willing to take charge in difficult situations when appropriate

  • Brings an operations mindset - takes ownership of services in production, monitors proactively, and drives a fast time to repair when issues arise

  • Enjoys mentoring others and helping create an inclusive, supportive team culture

  • Is excited about building systems that have a positive social impact

  • Has a good sense of humor and enjoys working in a collaborative environment

Qualifications

What you bring

  • 4+ years developing in JavaScript/TypeScript, with strong proficiency in TypeScript

  • 4+ years building web-based applications, with depth in React or another modern frontend framework

  • Solid backend development experience in Node.js or similar technologies, across multiple services and codebases

  • Experience with multiple programming languages and modern frameworks, plus a range of development and production monitoring tools

  • A track record of leading the design and delivery of features or components end to end

  • Experience designing inter-dependent modules and features (system design)

  • Experience mentoring or coaching more junior engineers

  • Strong fundamentals in computer science concepts

Great-to-haves

  • Experience with Ruby (Grape and Sequel) - our core backend services run on it

  • Experience with Redis for caching, sessions, and background job processing (e.g. Sidekiq, BullMQ)

  • Experience with telemetry and observability tools such as Datadog or Dynatrace

  • Experience with GraphQL and RESTful APIs

  • Experience with PostgreSQL and relational databases

  • Experience designing and operating microservices architecture

  • Experience with healthcare or regulated industry applications

  • Strong knowledge of testing frameworks and CI/CD practices

  • Experience with AI implementation, machine learning libraries, or working with AI APIs

Advanced knowledge of English is required because you will most of the time interact in English with external parties (clients, suppliers, candidates, external partners, etc.); interact in English with internal parties (colleagues, internal partners, stakeholders, etc.); and work with IT tools whose interface is only accessible in English as part of this position's main responsibilities given its national scope.
