The Gas & Electric Design Contracting team is seeking a motivated intern to support data analysis, reporting, process improvement initiatives, and operational activities across our design organization. This internship provides an opportunity to work with leaders and subject matter experts responsible for gas and electric design, contracting, governance, compliance, and business process improvement.
The intern will assist with analyzing business performance metrics, identifying trends within operational data, developing dashboards and reports, documenting processes, and supporting continuous improvement efforts. The role will provide exposure to utility operations, project management, engineering design processes, contractor management, and business analytics while offering hands-on experience with real-world projects that directly support business goals.
The position will be based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with opportunities to collaborate across multiple design offices and operational teams throughout the service territory.
Typical intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
  • Analyze operational and project data to identify trends, risks, and improvement opportunities
  • Develop and maintain dashboards, reports, and performance metrics using Excel, Power BI, and other reporting tools
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives through process mapping, documentation, and workflow analysis
  • Assist with data validation, quality reviews, and reporting related to design, contracting, and project delivery activities
  • Create presentations and recommendations for leadership based on data findings and business insights
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Design, Project Management, Engineering, Operations, and Business Support

This position is for a May 24, 2027 start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship's initial term based on the candidate's successful performance and Xcel Energy's business needs.
Minimum Requirements:
  • Current student, Junior or higher
  • Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Data Science, Business Analytics, Statistics, Mathematics, Industrial Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management, Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Management Information Systems, Engineering Technology, Gas Design, or Electric Design related programs
  • Occasional travel (up to 10%) to company offices, service centers, operating facilities, or project sites within the service territory for meetings, job shadowing, field observations, and business engagement opportunities
  • Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the school year (up to 20 hours a week) and commuting to the designated work location in-person, per our hybrid work policy

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with Power BI, Tableau, or similar visualization tools
  • Coursework or experience in data analytics, statistics, process improvement, or business intelligence
  • Knowledge of SQL, Python, R, or other analytical tools
  • Experience creating dashboards, using A.I. and performance reporting
  • Understanding of utility operations, engineering, project management, or construction environments
  • Familiarity with SharePoint, Power Automate, or process documentation methodologies
  • Interest in energy, infrastructure, and utility operations.
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
