Junior Audio Software Engineer information

What does a junior audio software engineer do?

A Junior Audio Software Engineer assists in designing, developing, and maintaining software related to audio processing and production. This role typically involves writing code for audio applications, debugging software, and collaborating with senior engineers to implement new features. They may also work with digital signal processing (DSP), test audio plugins, and ensure audio quality and performance. Junior engineers often learn on the job, gaining experience with various programming languages and audio frameworks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a junior audio software engineer?

To thrive as a Junior Audio Software Engineer, you typically need a solid understanding of digital signal processing, programming languages such as C++ or Python, and a relevant degree in computer science, audio engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with audio development frameworks (like JUCE or VST SDK), version control systems (e.g., Git), and DAWs is highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate and adapt in multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure the creation of high-quality, efficient audio software that meets both technical requirements and user needs.

What are some typical projects a junior audio software engineer might work on in their first year?

As a Junior Audio Software Engineer, you can expect to participate in tasks such as developing and refining audio processing algorithms, implementing features in digital audio workstations (DAWs), and debugging audio plugins or drivers. Early on, you'll often assist senior engineers with code reviews, unit testing, and integrating third-party audio libraries. Collaboration with sound designers, QA testers, and product managers is common, helping you understand both technical requirements and user experience. These projects provide valuable hands-on experience and a foundation for more complex responsibilities as you grow in the role.

What is the difference between Junior Audio Software Engineer vs Audio Software Developer?

AspectJunior Audio Software EngineerAudio Software Developer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Computer Science, Audio Engineering, or related field; some experience with audio programmingBachelor's or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related; strong programming skills in audio development
Work EnvironmentEntry-level position in audio tech companies, game studios, or multimedia firmsMid-level to senior roles in similar environments, often with more project responsibility
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by companies developing audio plugins, game audio, or multimedia applicationsCommonly used in professional audio software development, DAW companies, or audio tech firms

The main difference is that a Junior Audio Software Engineer is an entry-level role focusing on learning and supporting audio software projects, while an Audio Software Developer typically has more experience and responsibility in designing and implementing audio applications. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and are found in similar industries, but the developer role involves more advanced development tasks.

Job description

Do you love crafting elegant solutions to the hardest problems in audio and acoustics? Are you a big-picture, forward-thinking engineer who understands how audio subsystems integrate into a SoC and a system? At Apple, our Architecture group is responsible for connecting the hardware and software that bring sound to life across our products. Join this team, and you'll collaborate with engineers across Apple to design how our audio technologies work in unison!
Description
We are looking for a SoC Audio Architect to join our team defining the audio subsystem architecture for Apple's SoCs - technology that powers experiences across nearly every Apple product, from ultra-low-power keyword detection to high-fidelity spatial audio. This is primarily an audio subsystem architecture role, not an audio IP design role; experience designing audio IP is valued as background but is not the core function of the position.
In this highly visible role, you will own the multi-generational subsystem architecture and roadmap for audio subsystems, collaborating closely with Silicon Engineering, Software Engineering, and Hardware Engineering teams to size subsystems and optimize trade-offs between performance, power, and area. You will have visibility across every product line and be accountable for architectures that scale across the portfolio, from early concept through tape-out and into shipping product.","responsibilities":"Define and own architecture specifications for audio subsystems across multiple Apple SoC product lines
Author and maintain multi-generational technical roadmaps for audio subsystems, securing executive buy-in
Contribute to performance and power modeling of audio workloads to determine subsystem sizing and partitioning across interfaces, accelerators, DSPs, and software
Collaborate with Silicon Engineering, Software Engineering, Hardware Engineering, and Firmware teams from concept through tape-out
Present architecture and performance study results to cross-functional and executive audiences to inform technical decisions
Mentor engineers and support onboarding and talent development within the team
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree with 10+ years of relevant industry experience
Experience defining architecture specifications for audio, DSP, or signal processing subsystems within an SoC
In-depth understanding of SoC architecture concepts, such as on-chip fabric protocols, memory concepts, and clocking, reset, and power management
Skilled in digital signal processing algorithms, including audio algorithms
Understanding of SoC power modeling and Power/Performance/Area (PPA) optimization
Understanding of SoC audio interfaces (e.g., I2S, PDM, TDM, MIPI SWI3S)
Proficiency in hardware/software co-design, including familiarity with RTL design concepts (e.g., System Verilog)
Excellent interpersonal, leadership, and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence across organizations.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree
Experience with SoC architecture principles
Experience with SoC audio processing
Pay & Benefits
At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $184,700 and $277,600, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
