Jtac Operators and Fire Support Specialists both serve in military tactical environments, often with overlapping responsibilities. Jtac Operators focus on coordinating close air support and precision strikes, requiring specialized certifications like JTAC. Fire Support Specialists assist in planning and coordinating artillery and fire missions. While their roles differ slightly in scope, both are vital for battlefield coordination and require similar training and certifications.

What are some common challenges faced by a JTAC Operator in coordinating air support during dynamic combat situations?

JTAC Operators often face the challenge of rapidly changing battlefield conditions, requiring them to maintain clear communication with both ground forces and pilots under intense pressure. They must quickly process complex information, adapt targeting plans, and ensure strict adherence to safety protocols to prevent friendly fire. The role demands strong situational awareness and the ability to make split-second decisions while collaborating closely with diverse military teams in high-stress environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a JTAC Operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a JTAC (Joint Terminal Attack Controller) Operator, you need advanced knowledge of close air support tactics, military communications, and targeting procedures, typically backed by military training and JTAC certification. Proficiency in using radios, GPS systems, laser designators, and specialized mission planning software is essential. Exceptional situational awareness, decision-making under pressure, and effective communication are critical soft skills in this high-stakes role. These skills ensure the safe and effective coordination of air-to-ground operations, minimizing risk to friendly forces and maximizing mission success.

What are JTAC Operators?

JTAC Operators, or Joint Terminal Attack Controllers, are highly trained military personnel responsible for directing the action of combat aircraft engaged in close air support and other offensive air operations from a forward position. They serve as the critical link between ground forces and aircraft, ensuring precise targeting and minimizing the risk of friendly fire. JTACs must have extensive knowledge of both ground and air tactics, communication systems, and weaponry. Their expertise is vital for mission success in complex and dynamic combat environments.

Job description

LMR Technical Group (LMR) is seeking a JTAC Simulator Operator to join our team.

Location: Hurlburt Field, FL

Job Description:

The Simulator Operator is responsible for operating, supporting, and sustaining JTAC simulation capabilities that directly enable AFSOC training and readiness. This is a mission-facing operations and training role, not a generic IT support position. The Simulator Operator must be able to operate all aspects of currently fielded JTAC simulator systems, support instruction across the training continuum, develop and maintain squadron CAS simulator scenarios, support LVC and DMO events, and conduct basic troubleshooting and maintenance actions required to keep systems mission capable.

This position supports the AFSOC JTAC program by combining technical simulator proficiency with a working understanding of JTAC operations and training outcomes. The Simulator Operator is expected to help enable IQT, MQT, CT, and upgrade training while ensuring simulators remain functional, current, and aligned with supported unit needs. The role includes accomplishing minor software updates, loading databases, creating scenarios, replacing line replaceable units, running scripted software or queries, documenting issues, and notifying the service company and Government leadership of simulator deficiencies within required timelines. The position also supports broader JTAC duties identified in the PWS and may participate in functional meetings, focus groups, and JTAC SIMCERT-related working groups.

The successful candidate must be able to transition quickly into the supported unit, complete required certification and proficiency milestones, and operate in a controlled military environment with strong attention to security, accountability, and mission effect. The Simulator Operator must complete IAT Level I certification within the required timeframe, attain proficiency with the assigned simulator, and adhere to the JTAC-Instructor requalification timeline identified in the PWS.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operate JTAC simulator systems, including currently fielded platforms such as JTC-TRS, DT-100, HAVIC, and newly fielded accredited JTAC simulators.
  • Support JTAC instruction across IQT, MQT, CT, and upgrade training events.
  • Implement unit-provided simulator scenarios and develop and maintain squadron CAS simulator scenarios.
  • Conduct minor software updates, load databases, run scripts or queries, and replace line replaceable units as directed.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting when simulator systems malfunction.
  • Document and report simulator issues to the simulator service company and Government leadership within 72 hours of discovery.
  • Support LVC and DMO training and exercises as required by the supported unit.
  • Provide JTAC, JTAC-Instructor, and JTAC-Evaluator-related support as required by the PWS.
  • Maintain simulator status inputs and utilization data for monthly reporting.
  • Comply with security, OPSEC, safety, and unit access requirements at all times.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Current (or ability to obtain and maintain) Secret security clearance (T3 background investigation). Please visit the following link for more information:https://www.dcsa.mil/Personnel-Security/Background-Investigations-for-Applicants/Investigations-Clearance-Process/.
  • U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a Secret clearance and work in this position.
  • Must meet the Appendix 1 role-specific qualification requirement for Simulator Operator: BSO, JTAC-I.
  • Must have or have held a JTAC-I qualification rating.
  • Experience operating or supporting military simulator systems, tactical training devices, or comparable mission systems in an operational training environment.
  • Ability to complete IAT Level I certification within 6 months of completing baseline certification and assumption of duties, and attain proficiency with the current simulator within an additional 60 days.
  • Working knowledge of U.S. military command and control structures.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain all security requirements identified in the DD-254 for the supported site.
  • Valid civilian driver's license and ability to qualify for a military driver's license for supported vehicles and equipment.
  • Demonstrated land navigation and map and compass skills using latitude/longitude and UTM coordinates.
  • Ability to work independently in a mission-driven environment while coordinating closely with unit leadership and instructors.
  • Must pass an initial required drug screening and comply with random drug testing requirements.
  • This position requires the successful completion of a pre-employment medical physical and/or health screening to ensure the candidate is able to safely perform the essential duties of the role. Continued employment may be contingent upon maintaining the physical and medical standards necessary for job performance, in accordance with applicable laws and organizational policies.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship now or in the future.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Current, active Secret or Top-Secret security clearance.
  • Prior JTAC simulator operations experience on JTC-TRS, DT-100, HAVIC, or similar systems.
  • Prior SOF, AFSOC, TACP, or Special Tactics support experience.
  • Experience with scenario development for CAS or tactical training events.
  • Experience with DMO, LVC, or networked training environments.
  • Familiarity with SIMCERT processes, functional working groups, or tactical training systems support.
