About the Role

You will contribute to the success of the BMC Series by supporting editorial handling of content in BMC Sports Science, Medicine and Rehabilitationand BMC Rheumatology,and by driving the content development of this journal. This is a dynamic and varied role that will give you the opportunity to see content across a broad range of topics and contribute to the success of BMC as a whole. Communication is a key part of this role, as you will need to build excellent and productive relationships with the external Editorial Board who manage the peer review process and with internal teams responsible for journal editorial office support.

This is a hybrid role based in New York or Philadelphia. This location supports effective collaboration with the team and aligns with business needs.

Role Responsibilities

  • Develop a journal development strategy for BMC Sports Science, Medicine and Rehabilitation and BMC Rheumatology, using data-driven planning that supports both journal-specific and broader BMC objectives.

  • Collaborate with colleagues across the Journals Group to support subject-specific publishing strategies and initiatives.

  • Identify, commission, and develop reviews, collections, and supplements while building strong partnerships with the scientific community through effective communication and relationship management.

  • Oversee editorial handling of manuscripts, applying critical scientific evaluation and manuscript assessment skills to ensure scientifically rigorous, novel, and impactful content is published.

  • Make sound editorial decisions and provide guidance to Editorial Board Members while maintaining high editorial standards.

  • Investigate and resolve publishing and research integrity cases, demonstrating resilience while navigating complex ethical and procedural challenges.

  • Work closely with internal teams to resolve editorial issues efficiently and maintain author satisfaction through collaboration and operational excellence.

  • Contribute to editorial policy development by applying critical judgment and evidence-based thinking.

  • Build and maintain productive relationships with Editorial Board Members, reviewers, and authors through strong interpersonal awareness and communication skills.

  • Lead discussions with Senior Board Members regarding journal strategy, board recruitment, policy updates, and content development.

  • Support the recruitment, onboarding, training, and ongoing engagement of Editorial Board Members, ensuring operational consistency and excellence.

  • Organize and lead Editorial Board meetings and strategic discussions, demonstrating strong communication, stakeholder management, and organizational skills.

  • Ensure Editorial Board Members understand and adhere to journal policies, editorial standards, and best practices.

  • Partner with marketing teams to increase journal visibility and community engagement through strategic content promotion and outreach.

  • Develop website content, blogs, and social media initiatives that enhance journal visibility and showcase BMC values.

  • Represent the journals at conferences and networking events, effectively communicating journal objectives and building relationships within the scientific community.

  • Contribute to a supportive and high-performing editorial culture by sharing expertise, supporting colleagues, and demonstrating resilience during periods of change or high workload.

Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

  • Educated to PhD or MD level (or equivalent) in rehabilitation, sports science, rheumatology, or a related discipline.

  • Previous substantial editorial experience in scientific publishing is required for consideration at the Senior Editor level.

  • Demonstrated ability to critically evaluate scientific content and assess manuscripts for scientific rigor, novelty, relevance, and impact.

  • Strong decision-making skills, with the ability to make balanced, objective, and evidence-based editorial decisions.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a customer-focused approach.

  • Proven ability to build productive relationships with diverse stakeholders and demonstrate strong interpersonal awareness.

  • Strong collaborative mindset with experience working effectively across teams and functions.

  • Excellent organizational, prioritization, and project management skills, with a focus on operational excellence.

  • Demonstrated resilience, with the ability to manage competing priorities, navigate ambiguity, and adapt to changing business needs.

  • Ability to balance short-term deadlines with long-term strategic goals.

US Annualized Base Salary Range: Associate Editor: $80,000 / Senior Editor: $95,000 . The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education, skill level and equity. The US salary range does not align with the salary ranges in other countries when converted to the currency of that country.
