The Barista is the master craftsperson within Commonwealth Joe Coffee Roasters. A blend of art and science, the craft of the Barista is expressed through the preparation and presentation of coffee. A Barista is responsible for serving high-quality drinks and maintaining a high standard of professionalism and customer experience. They strive to prepare drinks efficiently while not sacrificing quality. They provide exceptional customer service and assist with other coffee shop responsibilities as needed.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
Coffee Quality Expertise 

  • Develops expertise in preparing espresso drinks, pour-overs and coffee 
  • Diagnoses and improves coffee quality through measurement and taste 
  • Regularly cups and tastes coffees to develop palate and expertise 
  • Maintains cost control measures by reducing waste 

Customer Experience Expertise 

  • Delights customers by meeting their needs in unexpected ways 
  • Maintains a high degree of professionalism and customer experience while on and off shift • Builds community by getting to know regulars by name 
  • Maintains exceptional personal hygiene 
  • Cleans and organizes workstations at all times 

Inventory & Supplies 

  • Measures inventory and restocks essential coffee shop supplies 
  • Works with Lead and Manager to communicate supply needs 

Upkeep & Maintenance 

  • Performs regular equipment maintenance to ensure high-quality coffee and an environment.
Teamwork
  • Works together with Leads, Associates, and Managers to anticipate customer needs
  • Fulfills the role of Associate when necessary
  • Works schedule as assigned and covers for other team members when necessary
  • Solves complex and open-ended problems on shift 
Sales & Promotion Support
  • Promotes seasonal drinks, featured menu items, and loyalty programs.
  • Provides product recommendations based on customer preferences to enhance sales.
Safety & Compliance
  • Follows all food safety, health, and sanitation guidelines.
  • Ensures compliance with company policies and local health regulations.
